Helping my Mom Beat this Fund

Most of you who are reading this probably know who my mom is. Her name is Connie Crawford and she has worked at Shellbrook Medical Clinic/Primary Health Care Clinic for almost 18 years and was most likely the one who did everything she could to get you in quickly to see the doctor. She was most likely the one to help you down the stairs and hold your hand during a painful procedure or after getting difficult news. My mom is the most caring and selfless person I have ever met and despite her years of giving people love and care, life has not been so fair with her the past year. In fact, lately every day is a waking hell for my mom.

It started with about a year ago when the symptoms first started appearing... extreme muscle pain, lower body swelling, vision loss in one eye overnight. Mom was admitted to the hospital in Shellbrook for a couple days and was transferred between PA and Shellbrook because no one could find anything wrong. As the next few months passed, mom got worse and worse and missed a lot of work due to constant tests and procedures and just overall being in too much pain.

The symptoms got worse and more appeared; tingling and numbness in her muscles, her balance was lost, extreme pain all over her body. She had trouble swallowing and had lost all her strength in the left side of her body. She also had overall weakness which resulted in a broken foot, which she had to go to work on because she could not afford to miss work. In February, mom decided to drive herself to Saskatoon and sat in Emerg for 12 hours. She was given an emergency CT scan and was sent home with the diagnosis of a stroke or a brain tumour.

Mom was called back by the neurologist the next morning and was called in for an emergency MRI. She drove back to Saskatoon immediately and had the MRI done. They found 10 lesions on her brain, 7 on the right (which explains the left sided weakness) and 3 on the left side. Althouh a stroke and tumour were ruled out, These lesions indicated a sign of Multiple Sclerosis.

We then recieved a phone call from a top doctor in Saskatchewan who looked over her case and blood work, and my mom was officially diagnosed with Lymes Disease. Many of you probably see this floating around facebook lately, it is an inflammatory disease caused by an infected tick. Because it took so long for a diagnosis, mom was now in the late stage of the disease where it had spread throughout her body and into her brain. Mom immedately had a pic line inserted into her arm for IV therapy which allows her to pump hardcore antibiotics into her system twice a day. She does this by herself at home and has help from my 15 year old brother. She has been doing this for the last 60 days and we could be looking at 2 years of doing this every single day.

Now although Lymes Disease can mimick the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, neurology is waiting on a second MRI to confirm that she also has MS. Without the MRI, we cannot begin her treatment for the Multiple Sclerosis.

While being treated for positive late stage Lymes Disease and while currently waiting for an MRI, mom experiences severe flare ups in which her symptoms become increasingly worse. These include: Muscle tremors and seizures, severe pain, uncontrollable twisting of her arms and legs, loss of peripheral vision, loss of sense of smell and taste, and loss of judgement and coordination (she cannot eat with a fork without stabbing herself). The bacteria in her brain causes intense panic attacks, severe memory loss, nightmares, depression etc. During these flare ups, mom will sleep 22 hours a day and can barely get up to eat.

Mom has not been able to work for a few months. She was on disability for awhile, recieving low pay checks to just get her through until she was cut off of it because they needed more "proof". We are currently fighting with disability to get her back on but things are beginning to become extremely tough for my mom. She is a single mom with absolutely no income with the start of a very long, hard road ahead of her. Groceries are becoming sparce and with rent and bill due dates approaching, things are getting tough for my mom and my brother. My mom can not afford to order her pain prescriptions, fill her vehicle with gas for doctors appointments, etc. I am doing everything I possibly can while living in Alberta but I am terrified for my mom and my brother and we have decided to reach out to our friends and family for help.

Every small amount helps, it will get my family through another week and allow them to shop for groceries and get my mom to her doctor appointments.

Even if you are not able to donate at this time, we thank you for taking the time to listen to my mom's story. She is my best friend and I can hardly stand to watch her in this amount of pain but hopefully this will alleviate some of the stress in her life.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
Jessica Crawford
