My name is Ja'el Bryant, I'm 17 years old, and I am a 2020 graduate. This isn't the story of how I didn't get to finish out my last year of high school with all my friends, attend senior prom, or even how I didn't get the graduation that I "deserved". Because honestly, none of that stuff is really important to me right now. This is the story of a young, independent, and underrepresented young female who just wants to attain her higher education.
All my life, I have dreamed, envisioned, and imagined what It would finally be like to move away from my family, and go to college; to actually go to school and educate myself while still learning about something that I want to do for my entire life. And now....I might never know what any of that is like.
Up until my April of 2017, I lived with my Nana--a widowed hard-working homeowner with 6 children-- who suffered from Dementia for over 10 years, until she serenely passed away at age 97. Respecting my grandmothers wishes, my family decided to sell her house--the only home I've ever known-- and split the earnings evenly 6 ways. With this money, my single-mother decided that she would use the money to get me into school and buy herself her first home in Dallas, Texas.
Unfortunately, its a bittersweet moment, because the house still isn't on the market yet. Which means that I have no money for school. From living from plastic containers to sharing a room with my mom throughout Senior year--because majority of our things are in storage--, its been tough. But never anything I couldn't handle.
My plans for Fall of 2020 are to attend Virginia State University. Located in Petersburg, Virginia. And to major in Mass Communications with an emphasis on Screenwriting and later enter the film industry. As I aspire to be a Creator that never stops. And just as film making is align with my plans for the goals, I will never stop fighting for my goals.
