My best friend and colleague Helga Weiss has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare form of lymphoma.
She will need treatment soon. Because this is a little known cancer, she will have to go to one of the few specialists in Germany or the U.S, in either case far away from her home at Lake Tankum in Northern Germany. She is researching her best options, and she hopes to be part of a clinical trial for one of the new therapies that has shown promise rather than opting for the broad spectrum chemotherapy that she would get from a normal oncologist. She has already started ozone therapy to boost her immune system, which is very expensive and unfortunately not covered by her health insurance. Experimental treatments are also not covered under the German health insurance system, so any treatment she does get will have to be covered out of pocket.
We don't know how long her treatment will last, but she will need many months for healing. During this time, it is critically important for her survival to have as little stress and worry as possible. But the bills and mortgage payments will not stop, which are the biggest sources of her stress. Unfortunately she receives no social security from the German government (Rente) because she lived outside of the country for so long. She will have to sell her house, but in the meantime she will need a financial bridge to get her through the next months.
