Helping Healers Heal: Support Nurses in Their Time of Need!

This is Hannah and Tom Burkett, two healthcare professionals from North Carolina. In early 2023, they were both working in hospitals, Hannah as a NICU nurse and Tom on his way to get his CRNA at UNC Greensboro. By the end of 2023, that all changed. Tom's brother passed away, which left the entire family broken. Tom's heart began to give out. He was told he would need a mechanical valve placed in his heart as well as a root repair to be able to survive. After the surgery was scheduled for the summer of 2024, Tom tore his quad tendon in his leg and began to wear a brace from his hip to his ankle. Hannah started to stay out of work to take care of him. Tom's surgery in the summer led to further complications, including the doctors finding a blood clot in his lungs and leg. At this point, Hannah and Tom have been out of work for many months and will continue to be out of work for many more. They are out of their PTO and FMLA and are living off of credit cards. The medical bills are coming in the mail every day. They are both dealing with the stress of these medical events, financial stress, and the emotional stress of losing a loved one.

Hannah and Tom have dedicated their lives to the care of others, and we want to show them how much we care for them as well. Without this help, they will be underwater financially for a long time, and healing will come slower with that kind of stress.
