My daughter Katy is in great need of your prayers and help! She and her boyfriend Steven were expecting their joyful blessing on March 12th, 2017. Their excitement turned to worry as Katy was battling gestational diabetes, but were maintaining well. Due to this and his size, the doctors decided to induce her on March 8th. Tragically, on February 25th, Katy's boyfriend Steven passed away of natural causes due to Coronary Artery Disease and other complications at the age of 35. She was devastated!
Ten days later, Steven Jr. was born. That journey was scary as the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck, he was blue and coded. Luckily, he came through and we all thought he was a happy googling boy. His first checkup on March 15th was great!
Two days later, March 17th, Katy received a call from the Children's Hospital of Michigan and due to blood tests taken at the hospital at the time of his birth she needs to get to the emergency room a.s.a.p to be transported immediately. We had no idea why and what was to come...
I followed the next day to Detroit, MI; my husband followed on Sunday and together we met with the Dr.'s; our Steven Jr. was diagnosed with Methylmalonic Acidemia; a very rare genetic disease. We have been in shock and she and Steven have been through quite a lot with many Dr's; blood and urine tests.
This disease means his body cannot process protein; he has to have special B12 shots every day, oral medication 3 times a day, as well as, a specialized formula. This will be a lifelong battle to determine what will be right for him.
She will need to travel to Detroit and Grand Rapids, MI quite frequently now as they do tests upon tests to determine more details and try to isolate which type he may have. The outlook with this disease is VERY grim and scary. We choose to face each day as a blessing as we know that the outcome is unclear.
She, Steven Jr. and her daughter, Nyla really need your support to assist with all the travel, medical expenses, daily needs and the unknowns to come!
This is not an easy request for us to ask of you! We are a military family, Steven Jr.'s Dad (Steven), Mom (Katy) and Grandpa(Fred), were and are serving and there to help others and now we need to ask you for your help!
