My name is Sharima Thamm and I spent now some months in Puerto Escondido, México where I encountered a great community. Due to COVID-19 many families of Puerto Escondido are at the moment in a vulnerable situation. That's why me and some colleagues decided to create a programme to help these families.
We are working to tackle the negative effects of the pandemic in Puerto Escondido, which at first sight, is a pure surfing paradise on the Mexican Pacific coast, with welcoming people and a traditional way of life.
However, it is a place which is particularly dependent on tourism and whose families are in a difficult situation due to the current situation.
Another aspect is that Mexico is one of the countries with the highest rate of diabetes and a general problem of overweight. In our country, heart disease and diabetes are the two main causes of death and both are factors that increase the risk of dying from COVID-19.
That is why we have created a programme that attacks this problem at its root: Familia Sana.
The aim of the Familia Sana programme is to provide families who are in an emergency situation due to COVID-19 with the tools and knowledge to grow their own healthy food. Special care is taken not to use agrochemicals that pose a high risk to the health of producers and consumers of the products.
Another important aspect of the programme is that the families give a small part of their harvest to another family of their choice, which is also in a difficult situation, thus increasing the number of beneficiaries of the programme. In order to achieve this goal, we have designed vegetable cultivation modules that have the necessary characteristics to ensure that the cultivation works without problems. This includes the following aspects:
- It is designed so that all family members can participate
- It protects the plants from insects and extreme weather conditions
- It ensures that cultivation is ecological and efficient
Families are shown how to maintain and improve their module through instructional videos and advice from Ruby Peñalosa, an expert in agroecology, in a whatsapp group, where she also answers questions ranging from "What is the best way to plant seeds in my module" to "How can I protect my plantations from plagues and insects in a natural way without having to use pesticides, etc.".
As the project progresses, the families exchange the best seeds from their different plants to enrich their harvests and optimise the nutrient content.
We work together with the local organisation "Sembrando buenas semillas", which runs a food bank that supports families in need. This helps us to identify the families that would benefit most from the "Familia Sana" programme.
The total cost to provide a family with a module including the soil, seeds, seedlings and professional guidance from an expert in agroecology is 5000 MXN (200 €).
So far two modules have been given to two families in a vulnerable situation and the next stage is to produce 10 modules and give them to 10 more families, thus creating a network between the families and making the exchange of seeds effective.
In order to multiply the effect of the programme, it is necessary for us to be able to register as an "Asociación Civil", i.e. a legal association, in Mexico. This will allow us to include and support more families in the programme and will also enable us to participate in state-sponsored social development programmes. For this part we would use about 500 € of the collected money.
We are sure that this programme will make an important difference in the lives of the participating families and strengthen the community of Puerto Escondido.

Aufgrund von COVID-19 befinden sich viele Familien in Puerto Escondido derzeit in einer schwierigen Lage. Deshalb haben ich und einige Kollegen beschlossen, ein Programm zur Unterstützung dieser Familien ins Leben zu rufen.
Wir arbeiten daran, die negativen Auswirkungen der Pandemie in Puerto Escondido zu bekämpfen, das auf den ersten Blick ein reines Surfparadies an der mexikanischen Pazifikküste ist, mit gastfreundlichen Menschen und einer traditionellen Lebensweise.
Allerdings handelt es sich dabei, um einen Ort, welcher besonders vom Tourismus abhängig ist und wessen Familien durch die aktuelle Situation in eine schwierige Lage geraten sind.
Ein weiterer Aspekt ist, dass Mexiko eines der Länder mit der höchsten Rate an Erkrankungen an Diabetes und einem allgemeinen Problem von Übergewicht ist. Hierzulande sind Herzkrankheiten und Diabetes die zwei Haupttodesursachen und beide sind Faktoren, welche das Risiko an COVID-19 zu sterben, erhöhen.
Deshalb haben wir ein Programm kreiert, welches dieses Problem von der Wurzel her angeht:
Das Programm „Familia Sana“ hat zum Ziel Familien, welche aufgrund von COVID-19 in eine Notsituation geraten sind, mit den Werkzeugen und dem Wissen auszustatten, um ihre eigenen und gesunden Lebensmittel anzubauen. Es wird besonders Wert darauf gelegt, keine Agrochemikalien zu nutzen, welche die Gesundheit der Produzenten, sowie der Konsumenten der Produkte, in hohem Maße gefährdet.
Ein weiterer wichtiger Aspekt des Programms ist, dass die Familien einen geringen Teil der Ernte an eine andere Familie ihrer Wahl abgeben, welche sich ebenfalls in einer schwierigen Lage befindet, wodurch der Kreis der Begünstigten des Programms wächst. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, haben wir Module zum Gemüseanbau entworfen, welche die nötigen Eigenschaften besitzen, damit der Anbau problemlos funktioniert. Dies beinhaltet die folgenden Aspekte:
- Es ist darauf ausgerichtet, dass alle Familienmitglieder teilnehmen können
- Es schützt die Pflanzen vor Insekten und extremen Wetterbedingungen
- Es sorgt dafür, dass die Kultivierung ökologisch und effizient ist
Die Familien werden in Form von Anleitungsvideos, sowie Beratung innerhalb einer Whatsappgruppe vonseiten der Expertin der Agrarökologie Ruby Peñalosa angeleitet, wie sie ihr Modul in Stand halten, verbessern und sie beantwortet Fragen von „Wie pflanze ich am besten Samen in mein Modul ein?“ bis zu „Wie schütze ich meine Anpflanzungen vor Plagen und Insekten auf eine natürliche Weise, ohne auf Pestizide etc. zurückgreifen zu müssen?“
Im weiteren Verlauf des Projekts, tauschen die Familien die besten Samen ihrer verschiedenen Pflanzen untereinander aus, um so die Ernten zu bereichern und die Nährstoffinhalte zu optimieren.
Wir arbeiten mit der lokalen Organisation „Sembrando buenas semillas“ zusammen, welche eine Lebensmittelbank betreibt, welche Familien in Not unterstützt. Diese hilft uns dabei, die Familien zu identifizieren, welche am meisten vom Programm „Familia Sana“ profitieren würden.
Die Gesamtkosten, um einer Familie ein Modul mitsamt der Erde, den Samen, Keimlingen und professioneller Anleitung einer Expertin der Agrarökologie zur Verfügung zu stellen, belaufen sich auf 5000 MXN (200 €).
Bis jetzt wurden zwei Module an zwei Familien in einer gefährdeten Situation gegeben und die nächste Etappe ist es, 10 Module herzustellen und an 10 weitere Familien zu übergeben, um auf diese Weise das Netz zwischen den Familien zu kreieren und den Austausch der Samen effektiv zu gestalten.
Damit sich der Effekt des Programms vervielfacht, ist es notwendig, dass wir uns als „Asociación Civil“, also als legalen Verein, in Mexiko registrieren können. So können wir mehr Familien in das Programm aufnehmen und unterstützen und es ermöglicht uns auch an staatlich geförderten Programmen für soziale Entwicklung teilzunehmen. Für diesen Teil würden wir ca. 500 € des gesammelten Geldes nutzen.
