My "Helping Boys Dream " initiative is driven to expose boys and young men of color to diverse career paths they may otherwise not consider or have seen themselves in. Expanding their understanding means broadening their social capital — and that’s the secret to opportunities and success , not just academics alone. With greater access to these relationships , students show higher levels of engagement, attain better grades, report higher aspirations, and participate more frequently in college-preparatory activities.
THINK: boys who love sports but don't know the NBA employs sports scientists, talent managers and nutritionists. Boys who enjoy making music and could benefit from learning about careers in engineering and licensing. Boys who feel there's only 'one way' to be a man and are waiting to be inspired by designers, artists and performers who look like them.
My name is Colin Lieu and I'm continually inspired by the boys and young men I work with who are continually written off by others as disengaged or violent. Instead, I see people who are waiting to have their potentially fully realized.
EACH SESSION with the 6 chosen mentees will involve yoga, meditation, group mentoring and a workplace field trip to meet relatable employees in diverse fields such as: performing arts, design, STEM, business, public service and sports.

** Donations over $200 will receive a framed print from my Mindful Illustrations series in partnership with @korean.koala .
*** Thanks to my nonprofit partners, Urban Yoga Foundation and SoBro , donations over $300 are tax deductible and a receipt from one of my partners will be issued. These donors will also receive a copy of my book and a framed print.
Funds raised through this campaign will be used to run program this pilot year. Once this proves to be a successful case study, all efforts will be made to apply for grants to keep the programming sustainable. Corporate donations from our host partners will help us reach our goal and ensure a launch in the summer of 2019.
LOGIC MODEL
100% of funding goes towards program implementation. Each session is estimated to cost up to $800 to cover venue hire, admission, travel, food, learning materials and staffing.
After a week-long orientation of 5 sessions, Mon to Fri, during the summer, mentees will participate in monthly sessions from October to May.
We expect mentees to: self-report a positive change in trusting relationships with non-familial adults, incur less infractions as reported by their schools, become more engaged and enroll in extracurricular activities aligned with their interests. Ultimately we want to support the mentees through to higher education enrollment in the field they are passionate about.
