Helping Asylum Seekers in the US

Donation protected
We represent the Harvard Medical School (HMS) chapter of Physicians for Human Rights (PHR). As students who firmly believe that health is a human right, and that protecting human rights is integral to health, our mission is to educate others about issues pertaining to human rights, provide forums for discussions surrounding human rights, and to empower people to serve as advocates in defense of human rights.

Presently, approximately 25,000 people are granted asylum in the US each year. However, generally more than 75,000 apply for asylum annually. It has been shown that testimonies provided by physicians increase the likelihood of receiving asylum from a baseline of 35% to 90%. Given these statistics, the recent political climate and the rise in human rights violations world wide, it is more important now than ever to train the next generation of physicians to advocate for and assist in securing safety for those seeking asylum in the United States. As such, we are seeking to start a student-run Asylum Clinic in partnership with PHR to organize and provide medical and psychological forensic evaluations for asylum-seekers in the Greater Boston area.

Why we need your help: We are raising money to support the establishment of the clinic and to recruit health professionals and medical students looking to be a part of this initiative. We will be holding a training on May 6th that will provide physicians and students with the introductory skillset that will allow them to begin engaging in asylum work.

Your donations will directly go into funding the training and clinical operations. These funds will go a long way to provide the best experience possible during the training and support the operation of the clinic.

On behalf of the HMS chapter of PHR, we thank you for your interest and support. Please join us in pledging to advocate on behalf of the rights of vulnerable and persecuted persons everywhere.
