Helping Amanda Long

Amanda Long is not only the mother of my son's girlfriend, but also a friend and a caring nurse of over 15 years. She has raised three amazing young women: one nurse, one aspiring forensic psychologist, and one aspiring veterinarian. Amanda has been inspired by her friends and family to further her education by pursuing a masters degree, specifically to become a women's health nurse practitioner. Despite all of Amanda's accomplishments, she has had way more than her fair share of hardships.

In June 2016, Amanda suffered an unexplained seizure causing her to lose consciousness, thus requiring brief but expensive hospitalization. After her eldest daughter's wedding, Amanda was able to return to work despite her spontaneous seizure. Then, in November 2016, Amanda had to take two weeks off work to tend to her middle daughter who was taken to Plano, TX, for spinal surgery.

Amanda returned to work when her daughter was released from the hospital; however, in December 2016, Amanda was in a car accident which left her vehicle totaled and her spine broken. She was flown to Lubbock where a neurosurgeon stabilized her most severely damaged vertebrae using titanium rods and screws, but other damaged vertebrae and several bulging discs were left untreated. This injury left Amanda unable to work for over three months. When she was finally medically cleared for duty, Amanda returned to work only to find that she suffers from chronic pain from her spine injury. As an ER nurse, working with severe back pain was almost impossible.

Fighting through the pain, Amanda continued to work several 12-hour night shift per week in an attempt to stay on top of the accumulating medical bills. She began seeing a chronic pain management specialist who recommended she have additional spine surgery to correct the parts of her spine which are causing such severe pain. Because she could not afford additional back surgery, Amanda chose to receive non-invasive treatments.

May 2017 brought heartache for Amanda and her family as her mother passed away at the young age of 66. Amanda had to take additional time off work to help with funeral arrangements, support her family, and mourn her loss.

Throughout May and June, Amanda suffered from severe nausea and vomiting every day for eight weeks. She was finally taken to the emergency room where she was transferred to Amarillo, TX. Amanda was diagnosed with a small bowel obstruction, requiring surgery. After finally returning home, Amanda was still experiencing vomiting episodes; her doctor who recommended additional CT scans for further evaluation. Discovering that she had several large gallstones, Amanda was scheduled for day surgery in early July to remove her gallbladder.

Prior to removing her gallbladder, Amanda was sedated and intubation was attempted; however, she aspirated a large amount of stomach acid and was unable to maintain adequate blood pressure and oxygen levels on her own. Due to her poor oxygen saturation, Amanda was taken to the ICU to stay that night, and the next day she was released to a normal hospital room to be closely monitored.

At 12:00am on Wednesday, July 5, Amanda crashed due to another aspiration incident. Nurses were alerted of her low blood pressure and oxygen saturation, and within minutes Amanda's blood pressure dropped to 58/29 with oxygen at only 54% (with the oxygen mask on). She was intubated again and taken to the ICU. Amanda is currently in the ICU, unconscious, intubated, and on a ventilator. X-rays show that she has a severe aspiration pneumonia to both lungs.

Amanda's family refuses to ask the public for assistance, but her medical bills are stacking up quickly. With Amanda's inability to stay healthy enough to work, even necessities are getting hard to manage. I would like to ask all my friends, family, and everyone who sees this to please, please, please contribute to helping Amanda's family survive this incredibly taxing year.
