Help Hayat, a Female Saudi Refugee

Donation protected
About Hayat:
Hayat (a pseudonym to protect her safety) has endured a lifetime of violent abuse and confinement by her male family members in Saudi Arabia. Because she chose not to practice Islam, her male family members have accused her of "dishonor" and repeatedly threatened her life.

As a female living in Saudi Arabia, Hayat received no help from the Saudi police or community. So she courageously fled alone to a country in the region to seek asylum and resettlement to a third country where she can be safe from violence and free to live the life she chooses.

While she awaits her refugee status determination by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)—a process that is drawn out over several months—Hayat lacks money for basic needs such as food, water, and shelter. As an asylum seeker, she is unable to work and earn a living, and as a single woman without male protection or any way to provide for herself, she is at risk of exploitation and further abuse. Unfortunately, the UNHCR was unable to provide more than a small, one-time grant that will not cover her basic living expenses during the many months she waits for her case to move forward.

Hayat took an enormous risk in fleeing from her abusive family. Having exhausted all potential funding sources, she now seeks your help to live safely and free from hunger as she awaits resettlement.

Your contributions will help cover Hayat's basic living expenses: food, water, rent, and transportation to psychological counseling. Some will also go toward her education, to cover fees for professional courses. We are deeply grateful for any assistance you can provide.

Expense breakdown:
$3,390 for 6 months' living expenses ($141 for rent, $100 for utilities, $71 for food, and $212 for other expenses and emergencies = $565/mo.) while Hayat awaits her refugee status determination interview.

$3,390 for an additional 6 months' living expenses while she awaits a decision and resettlement .

$1,975 for professional training courses that Hayat has been unable to repay.

Total fundraising target: $8,755.

About the organizers:
This fundraiser is conducted by law students who do pro bono legal aid work with refugees. We're taking no part of the proceeds, which will be wired directly to Hayat when the campaign concludes.
