Grandma NEEDS A ROOF

Our grandma's name is Margarita, but to us she is Mami Tita. She is 82 years old. On December 7, 2013 she lost her home of over 50 years and all of her personal belongings in a fire. Luckily she was able to get out of the house without sustaining any injuries.

Grandma's home was grossly underinsured. The contractor who offered to help her rebuild stole $22,000 from her. She had to move 40 miles away from her neighborhood. She is very independent, but she does not drive so she has been unable to do the things she used to do on the bus like go to the market, visit friends, go to church.

It took 6 months to get the small settlement check from the insurance company and find somebody to help us rebuild grandma's home on a tight budget. The settlement check was sent to the mortgage company, Banco Popular. In the meantime our family used our savings and maxed out our credit cards to purchase building materials and pay the construction workers. We have all been doing manual labor at the construction site to cut costs.

It has been over a year since grandma lost her home and BANCO POPULAR refuses to give her the money from the insurance company. We have been forced to stop the construction of her home and have run out of money. We still need to finish the framing and put a roof over the structure to protect it from the elements. This has caused grandma a lot of stress and sleepless nights.
