My name is Michelle and my husband is Josh and we have a son, Sam, who was diagnosed with type 2 Spinal Muscular Atrophy in June of 2014. He just turned two on Oct 15, 2014. We are raising money for equipment that he needs that our insurance company does not cover because they claim the equpiment to be "investigational or not medically necessary". In particular, is a stationary "stander" that is required to keep his spine straight so that he does not develop Scoliosis or Kyphosis. He is already showing signs of Kyphosis so it is vital that we get this equipment. I am pursuing an appeal with our insurance company but as everyone knows, it takes time. The other type of stander is a mobil stander so it has wheels that he can operate making him a little more  independent. I will post pictures and videos of the two. In addtition to the 2 types of Standers that we want to provide him, we have many copay balances piling up for all his physical therapy and occupational therapy visits. We are also pursuing a "stroller" type of wheelchair which will allow me to fold up and transport in my car as we do not have a vehicle that allows us to transport a true wheelchair yet. (Another extreme cost will be a handicap van). This "stroller" also comes with a "base" so that you can seat the chair part of the stroller on top so that it can be used to sit in in the home without having to bring the entire stroller itself into the house. However, this "base" part is, of course again, not covered by insurance. While coping with this diagnosis of our son, we are overwhelmed with the cost of everything that is required to keep him "healthy". That is why we are turning to GoFundMe in hopes of help.
