We are launching a fundraising effort to train an autism service dog to help Octavio, our six-year-old son who was diagnosed with moderate Autism Spectrum Disorder when he was three.

Our reaction when first hearing about these types of dogs, was.... huh? How can that help? Well, the more we learn about autism and the level of support that Octavio needs, the role of a service dog has become much clearer. This fundraiser-slash-blog effort is a way for us to share this effort with people in our lives.

The process of training a service dog takes about 8 months and is completely focused on the needs of the child they were chosen to help. In other words, the dog is tailor made to support Octavio in a way that will benefit him and our household- thereby converting the dog into not only a great companion, but the ideal means to meet our goals of learning and development. Dog selection and the training journey begins after a team of caregivers meet Octavio and learn about his life. The organization we have been working with is called BOCALÁN and provide black Labrador retrievers to people on the autism spectrum around the world.


Why a dog? What can they do?

 
Here are the main benefits a service dog can provide:
 
·        Provide motivation- you see, this is no pet. These dogs use their herding instincts to basically get the kiddo to focus on tasks that Octavio is just now learning, like dressing himself. Because autistic kids have heightened sensibility to touch and sound, instead of nipping at his heels (like a herding dog does), a cold nose to the arm is as equally motivating to Octavio as a barking is motivating to a herd of goats. We are hoping this can cut the time it takes for Octavio to complete simple tasks unsupervised, for example brushing his teeth, which right now could be an hour-long effort unsupervised. or never finish at all!   

·        Provide physical security- outside the home, Octavio can be tethered to the dog, which being on the larger side (black Labrador) could sit and keep him from running off or entering a dangerous situation.

·        Prevent bullying as he ages and enters middle school—everybody likes the kid with the dog, right? Experience suggests that the dog, being a celebrity amongst children, by association helps some of the classmates be less of a jerk. Ah, if only that worked as an adult!!

·        Stopping repetitive behaviors—If you know Octavio, you know he likes doors… a lot. Most people know this about him because it’s what he does when we are visiting other homes or public places, and it is a response to the stress of being out of his normal routine. His dog would be trained to intervene (with a lick of the face, or something similar) and try to redirect his attention, ultimately helping him with his frustration. 

·        Guide/Teacher dog—help instill good habits, such as stopping at crosswalks, staying calm in social situations, waiting. The dog would be a companion that helps him regulate his behaviors when he is an adult trying to become independent. As all parents, this is our goal, that one day Octavio will be autonomous, however we are realizing that this is not necessary an easy task, and one that a service dog would facilitate.

·        Allow us to have an animal in the household! Every new member of a family adds joy, right? Well dogs, along with joy, bring a tad of chaos and noise along with them, something our house already has plenty of. A service dog would be trained to be a calming presence that could REDUCE chaos. This would allow the entire household to reap the benefits of living with/caring for an animal, such as instilling a sense of responsibility and generating habits of have empathy for other living beings.

Estamos reuniendo dinero para entrenar un perro de asistencia para nuestro hijo Octavio, que hoy tiene seis años y fue diagnosticado con autismo a la edad de tres.

Nuestra primera reacción cuando escuchamos acerca de ese tipo de perros fue... cómo es posible? ¿Cómo un perro podría ayudarnos? Y bueno, mientras más conocemos sobre autismo y los apoyos y necesidades que requiere Octavio, el rol que cumpliría un perro de servicio se hace más claro para nosotros.

El proceso de entrenamiento de un perro de asistencia tarda alrededor de 8 meses y está enfocado exclusivamente en las necesidades de cada usuario, es decir sería entrenado para atender y ayudar en las dificultades específicas que tiene Octavio, lo que convierte al perro no solo en un buen compañero, sino además en un medio ideal para alcanzar sus objetivos de aprendizaje y desarrollo. La selección del perro y el entrenamiento de éste comienzan una vez que el equipo de entrenadores y terapeutas conocen a Octavio, cómo es su carácter y personalidad y aprenden acerca de sus rutinas diarias. La organización con la que estamos trabajando se llama BOCALÁN y tienen una vasta experiencia alrededor del mundo entrenando perros de asistencia.

¿Por qué un perro? ¿Cómo nos ayudaría?

En esta tarea, hicimos una pequeña lista de los principales beneficios que un perro de asistencia podría darnos.

·       Genera motivación: como pueden ver, en nuestro caso no se trata simplemente de una mascota. Estos perros usan su instinto de dirigir para que básicamente el niño pueda enfocarse en las tareas que está aprendiendo a realizar, como, por ejemplo, vestirse solo. Debido a que los niños autistas son hipersensibles al tacto o al sonido, una nariz fría sobre su piel (como la de los perros), podría motivarlo a continuar su tarea de vestirse solo cuando su foco se distraiga. En este sentido, esperamos que esto pueda reducir el tiempo que le toma a Octavio completar tareas simples sin supervisión, por ejemplo, cepillarse los dientes, lo que en este momento podría ser un esfuerzo de una hora sin supervisión... ¡O no terminar!


·        Brinda seguridad física: especialmente fuera de casa, donde Octavio podría ir atado al perro, y como se trataría de un perro grande (labrador), éste podría sentarse y detener al niño cuando quiera huir o salir corriendo sin medir el peligro.

·        Puede ayudar a prevenir el bullying a medida que crece: a todos les encanta ver a un niño y su perro, además, la experiencia nos muestra que los perros son muy populares entre los más pequeños, lo que podría ayudar a que sus compañeros de clase sean más inclusivos con Octavio y esto evite, en alguna medida, que sufra de bullying en el futuro.

·        Detener comportamientos repetitivos: ¡en el caso de nuestro Octavio, desde pequeño ha mostrado un gran interés por las puertas... quizás demasiado! La mayoría de nuestros cercanos sabe esto porque es lo que hace cuando visitamos otros hogares o lugares públicos, y es una respuesta al estrés por estar fuera de su rutina normal. Su perro estaría entrenado para intervenir (lamiendo su carita o algo similar) y tratar de redirigir su atención, ayudándole a desviar su fijación con las puertas.

·        Perro guía: como bien dice su nombre, creemos que guiaría y ayudaría a Octavio a inculcar buenos hábitos, como detenerse en los cruces de peatones, mantener la calma en situaciones sociales, esperar y, eventualmente, en un futuro, podría darle autonomía e independencia. El perro podría ser el compañero que ayude a regular sus conductas cuando sea adulto y quiera independizarse. 
Como padres es precisamente ésta nuestra meta, que un día logre ser autónomo, sin embargo, estamos conscientes de que no es una tarea fácil, por eso creemos que un perro de asistencia podría darle confianza y ayudarnos en este objetivo.

·        Nos permitiría tener un animalito es casa: Todo nuevo miembro en una familia agrega alegría, ¿verdad? Bueno, los perros, junto con la alegría, traen además un poco de caos y ruido, ¡algo que en nuestra casa ya tenemos! Sin embargo, un perro de asistencia para Octavio sería entrenado para generar calma y REDUCIR el caos, lo que sería imposible con una mascota sin entrenamiento.  Podría disfrutar de la convivencia con animales, adquirir el sentido de responsabilidad y cuidado de su perro, y además fomentar la empatía.
