Change A Kid’s Life-Help the Favela



"When you are born here, in a favela, soon you learn that you don't get chances... You learn that nobody cares for you ... Here we just survive..."

"You learn to eat what you have... to wake up early, to save more water because we never know when it will be over, to get a job young, to protect yourself from gunshots, bad influences and drug dealers, to dream without hope and to not wait for opportunities." 

"I grew up with this reality... Not only me, but everyone here. It is the life here."

"But then I found a chance to create chances. To give a better perspective, to inject hope, to open a door for the community."

"What we do is more than just teach. We open minds. "

"I will not stop until get there. That's my dream and I know I can make it. Do you wanna help me?"

I do.

That is part of Lohran's story.  

I met Lohran in Brazil in 2016. He shared his memories growing up as a kid, playing soccer (futbol) on his home street in the favela (slum) while hearing gun shots on the other side of the hill. Drug dealers were fighting for territory. He could not wear red clothes because that color could have gotten him killed.  

When I asked him how he learned English, he said, “I listened to English songs and I wanted to learn.”

Frail but not hopeless, Lohran found the strength to change. And to bring change back.

Him and all the folks from Educate the Favela make a tremendous difference to the community of Complexo Alemao, one of the biggest favelas (slums) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 

Through the means of real-life business and entrepreneurial skills, education, art, sports and culture they inspire and teach the community how to make a difference and how to make their lives better.

The school is raising funds to continue growing their good work into 2018 as well.  All raised funds are going to be used to pay teachers, pay for food, supplies and transportation for the community events, sports, art.
