Dustin's Story: In October 2012, Dustin Bartow, a vibrant 15 year-old boy, was a passenger in a tragic car accident. He sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that changed his life forever. The injury Dustin experienced was severe enough to lead to devastating life-long effects. Five years later, Dustin lives his daily life Quadriplegic, confined to a wheelchair, receiving nourishment through a feeding tube and requiring 24/7 complete care from his mother and caregivers. Dustin’s mother, Christy, is a single mother who juggles the load of balancing Dustin’s care and a fulltime job to keep a roof over their heads. This presents daily challenges such as finding reliable nursing care, keeping up with the growing household bills, lost wages and endless medical bills. One major challenge Dustin’s mother faces is securing reliable transportation. Dustin’s care requires multiple doctor appointments each month. His current wheelchair accessible van is nearly 20 years old. With endless mechanical problems, this vehicle has become unsafe for the transportation of Dustin to his appointments. Our story: We are a group of 14 best friends from highschool (that call ourselves the BRW and remain best friends in our mid-30's!) who have decided to dedicate our time and our annual gatherings to helping others through "Adopting Families" during the holidays and raising funds to help families through tragedy. On April 7, 2018, we will be participating in the 10K Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, SC to honor Dustin Bartow. Please help us get Dustin on the road safely by raising funds! No matter what the size of your donation, we truly appreciate your help. It gets us that much closer to providing a safe vehicle and any additional support we can provide for Dustin and his family.
