Help D'Janai Smile Again

Donation protected

I’ll never forget the FaceTime I got that morning. I answered the phone and all I could hear was loud medical equipment. Anxious, shocked, confused, all I could see was dried up blood on her hospital gown. The first thing D’Janai said was, “Don’t be scared, ok?” (like she’s not the one in the hospital). She slowly brought the camera to her face. Trying not to react to what I was looking at was beyond hard. So many questions immediately ran through my mind, but I did what she asked and tried not to be scared.

D’Janai has always been there for me (and so many others), and now it’s time for us to be there for her.  On March 21, 2021, D’Janai was at home working when she lost consciousness and fell face first. We all know that she hustles and grinds like no other, and on this day her body couldn’t take it. The doctors can’t pinpoint exactly what happened, but they do know stress and exhaustion played the biggest part. The good news is, she’s still alive. The bad news is, the amount of ongoing surgeries she needs is astronomical. Everyone thinks this is going to be a quick fix, but it’s actually the complete opposite. She will not be fully recovered until December 2022 at the earliest.

All the bones in the front of her mouth were completely shattered on impact. There was nothing they could recover. The roots of her teeth were lodged into her nose, and the bottom of her teeth ripped her lip to shreds. The ER doctors botched it while trying to sew it together, and the amount of scar tissue trapped inside is giving her speech impediment. It now needs to be reconstructed as well. Her wrist is dislocated in multiple places and she can’t even hold her cell phone. There’s more, but she can explain that when she’s ready.

Her company is run by her alone, and anyone that knows her knows that even something like this won’t keep her from following her dreams. We also know that she would avoid asking for help at all costs and just try to work even harder, but that’s where we come in. I can only do so much. So I’m using my voice, I’m doing what I can. I’ve watched her put a smile on so many faces and now I’m asking everyone to show up for the one person that’s shown up for us all.

Your donations will help to cover her medical bills, rehabilitation, and mental/physical therapy. There's power in prayer, there's power in numbers, and social media has shown us how far a simple repost can go. We appreciate any amount given and any words of encouragement during this time.

Thank you,

Mark 5:33-34 - Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over."
