Hello friends and family!
It’s Desirae! and many of you know that I have been a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant for 8 years. I have had the pleasure to work with ATI for over 2 yrs with becoming the Clinic Director of the Waldorf, Maryland location a little over 6 months ago. I LOVE my career as a Physical Therapist Assistant and I also LOVE having the opportunity to assist others day in and day out. When the opportunity arose for me to participate and help serve others in a medical missions trip with ATI Global Reach and Hearts in Motion to Zacapa, Guatemala I could not have been more excited as it has been my life’s purpose to serve others!

ATI Global Reach has partnered with Hearts In Motion (H.I.M.) for our October 2018 trip to Guatemala. Hearts In Motion is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Zacapa, Guatemala.

Some quick facts about H.I.M.:

Works alongside local people to strengthen communities in Central and South America
Utilizes the expertise of our local staff to always respect the culture
Believes every individual we meet should feel valued and respected.
Has over 32 years of experience
Has worked with 6,000+ adventure seeking volunteers in the last decade
While on this trip, I will be working at both the established H.I.M clinic in Zacapa, Guatemala as well as mobile clinics that travel to other villages in the area. At the established clinic, I will provide physical therapy services to a variety of patients, but mainly to patients who recently underwent orthopedic surgery. People travel from all around the area to be treated at this clinic as therapy services are not widely available or accessible in the country. When I am participating in a mobile clinic, not only will I be providing physical therapy services to individuals in more remote villages, I may also be providing some general medical services. Most of the people seen at the mobile clinics are unable to travel to the Zacapa clinic so this provides a great opportunity for them to seek medical care that they may otherwise not have access to.

Did you know that over half of Guatemala’s population lives in poverty? Due to this extreme poverty, access to basic healthcare is nearly impossible. In the United States, the medical budget per person is around $3,500; in Guatemala it is only $55. Access to rehabilitation services is scarce.

Please consider donating to help me get to Guatemala! I am asking for your support to help defray the costs needed to participate in this trip: airfare, lodging, meals and program costs. Any level of support is greatly appreciated. I hope to continue my passion of improving global health through service. Please share, support, and spread awareness!

I will be updating frequently as the deadline to obtain funds is Oct. 5th!

Love Always xoxo,
Des
