This year I will be going to the Masai Mara to work at a very impoverished school in Kenya! I am excited that my volunteer assignment will be working at the children's clinic! At the clinic we will be helping them with a long list of basic health concerns that you and I take for granted.
When I'm not at the clinic I will be helping to building the school a kitchen. The school has 400+ children and they are responsible for feeding the kids every day, however, the school does not even have a kitchen. That is why the service project for this year will be to build the school a kitchen. Many parents send their children to school because they know the children will get at least one meal that day since many cannot provide food at home. Even still, the children are lucky if they even get a half cup full of corn to eat for the whole day. Until a year ago they did not even have access to clean water
As you can imagine, the cost of such a trip is high and buying the supplies and delivering the supplies puts a large burden on the Kenya Project.

How the Kenya Project got started:
Seven years ago, a little 8 year old African American boy named Corey, from Maywood, New Jersey went to visit the Maasai Mara in Kenya with his family. He visited Empopongi Primary School where a little girl, leaning up against a mud hut, reached up for his half finished bottle of water. He gave it to her and walked away raging in anger. I asked him what was wrong. He looked up to me and said, "Dad, these children look just like me, but they don't have any clean water, food to eat, or clothes to go to school in. That's not fair. And it makes me mad. We have to do something about this." I told my son that I didn't think it was possible to help all these children on the other side of the world. But thank God, he didn't listen to me. He went home and raised $1,495.00 from his school and told me to get Rotary to buy food for these children. I couldn't say no. Maywood Rotary agreed that this was an important project they could sponsor. That was the start of Maywood Rotary KenyaProject.
Corey, who has been given the Maasai tribal name Serooni (he who helps in time of trouble), has been back to the Maasai Mara every year, with trip volunteers to help the Maasai children. His idea built an entire school. I know that with your help and partnership, Corey's dream of helping can continue to help even more Kenyanchildren.

More about the Kenya Project:
The Maywood Rotary Kenya Project is a group of 63 trip volunteers and hundreds of donors who feel that children born in a very poor part of the world deserve an education as much as our children do. They have dedicated their skills, talents, and donations to help one Maasai elementary school at a time in Kenya. On top of contributing their own time and money, they have raised sponsor donations to build the school. Others (schools, churches, temples and community groups) have generously donated much needed funds to keep our project going. All volunteers and donors have truly changed the lives of so many of these children.
Another important part of the Kenya Project are our supporters in Kenya. First is our full time Rotary Representative, Mercy Purity. Out of her office at Rotary House, she works full time providing help to individual Maasai families, doing construction estimates, purchasing supplies, advocating for the Maasai community, administering the scholarship program, and so much more. In Nairobi, Christoff Adventures, our in-country travel agent, also donates many of their services and help to insure that each trip truly become a "Trip of a Lifetime" for every volunteer.
In short, the Maywood Rotary Kenya Project is made up of people just like you; people who care and want to make a difference in the world.
