Craniofacial Surgery Help

Donation protected
Darniel (Dewey) Walker is a 32 year old, who was born with a severe craniofacial deformity. The cause of his birth defect was considered to be the result of Amniotic Band Syndrome. This refers to a sporadic condition that occurs in approximately 1 in 1,200 to 1 in 15,000 births. The exact cause of the syndrome is not known; early rupture of the amnion resulting in bands that insert on the body of the fetus is the most accepted view. The bands may lead to amputations, constrictions and other deformities of the fetus.

All aspects of this young man's life have been profoundly affected by his disfigurement.

Born March 31, 1982 at Englewood Hospital in Chicago, to a 19 year old single mother from an impoverished background. She lived in the projects on the south side of Chicago, and could not care for her son's special needs. Darniel was placed in the foster care system. Between reconstructive surgeries, medical procedures, and multiple placements in foster homes, his caseworkers frantically searched for a family willing to adopt a child with such extraordinary needs.

Darniel has had 12 surgeries for reconstruction since birth, his first surgery done when he was only 13 days old to remove scar tissue and notches from his eyelids to prevent further deterioration of his cornea.

At 2 1/2 years old Darniel was adopted by the Walker family in Oklahoma who unfortunately, already had twenty other children. Despite the drawbacks, this was the only family Darniel knew. Sadly his adopted parents mistreated him and they did not follow through with the rest of his well needed reconstructive surgeries.

When he was 12 years of age Special Education records shows, "More than anything else in the whole world, Darniel wants his face to look like any other student at Pawhuska High School. He has had several operations and was so pleased when he was made a nose for the first time like everyone else had." Of course, he was still feeling self-conscious about the looks and stares he received from others. His feelings was often hurt when some classmates would call him "Frankenstein" in school.

However, for the most part other students appeared very fond of Darniel as he was always very friendly and outgoing. In his special education classes his performance was average to above average.

When Darniel was fifteen, his adopted parents abandoned him along with several of his adopted siblings and once again, Darniel was returned to the foster care system. Subsequently, he dropped out of school in the ninth grade and moved himself out of foster care. The following year Darniel attempted to reunite with his family who were living in Missouri. They rejected him and life has been very hard for him up until now.

Darniel reports that his only work history was when he worked as a dishwasher in a restaurant in Muskogee, Oklahoma in September of 1998 at the age of 16; he worked for approximately one month.

Darniel says that he would like to work but when employers see his face disfigurement, they do not want to hire him. In March of 1999, Darniel applied for S.S.I. Disability Benefits in Oklahoma and is now receiving $712.00 a month from Missouri S.S.I. to live on. For those that really know Darniel, one thing is for certain, and that is Darniel is not disabled. He is very intelligent and he can do anything, like roofing houses, carpentry, and general labor.

Darniel has dreams of helping others who were born with birth defects, helping abandoned foster children, and helping the run away abused kids after he completes his surgeries.

Darniel has no bitterness nor does he harbor any un-forgiveness in his heart towards the people who rejected him due to of his face disfigurement. He kept believing that a one day his change would finally come. He kept believed that one day the right doctor would finish the final reconstruction of his face and give him the hope of one day finding a wife, starting a family of his own, and give them financial security.

Darniel is so determined to raise a large amount of money to live on doing his surgery, that he knocks on doors and boldly ask for donations. The good news is Darniel has met a Doctor that said he would gladly perform his final surgeries. His name is Virender K. Singhal, MD, DA, LRCP (London), MRCS (England), FRCS (Edinburgh), FACS, FAAP, MBA (Healthcare) -                               www.singhalplasticsurgery.com

Born and educated in New Delhi, India. He had been recognized as the "Super Doctor" for the last eight consecutive years in Kansas City. This nomination is by all the plastic surgeons in the city. Last year, he also received the honor of being one of twenty "Kindest Kansas Citians" based on one out of 6,000 essays written by school children throughout Kansas and Missouri.

The great passion that he has for helping people, swelled up inside of him when he first laid his eyes on Darniel's face.

Darniel's first surgery is scheduled for December 3rd, 2014 at Liberty Hospital and by September 2015, Darniel's Face will be totally transformed. The cost of the surgery is covered but his daily living conditions and needs are not, because of no company will hire him for now. It gets very stressful for him but, he refuses to surrender.

With your help, your prayers and generous donations Daniel's life will be drasticly changed.

This awe-inspiring book will not only touch the lives of thousands of people, it would motivate them to Face to Truth - that in spite of life challenges, difficulties and physical setbacks, their lives has a great purpose and a destiny.Your prayers and generous giving will also help in the writing and plubishing of Darniel's book.
