Medical bills for Corey Cabaniss

Donation protected

On Friday evening about 9:00 Corey was driving to work on Page Road in Powhatan.  We believe he went off the right side of the road slightly and over corrected, crossed the road and hit a tree.  Thanks to the woman living in the house where he hit the tree, help was on the way quickly.    He was med flighted to MCV hospital.

As for injuries, he has a grade 5 lacerated liver, severe bruising to his lungs, which is impeding his breathing, injuries around his heart, an exposed fracture to his right ankle, a broken knee, hip and several ribs.  He also has a large laceration above the knee.  All his injuries are on his right side.

Corey went into surgery Friday night to repair the liver., however, the bleeding was so extensive that they could not stop it and they were afraid he would bleed out so they packed the liver, pumped 11 units of blood back in and took him to IR.  This is where they can insert something through the femoral artery and can see like a real time X-Ray and pinpoint where it is bleeding.  (Sorry, I'm not a medical person and I may not have correct terms, etc. I just trying to share what I know)  He finally made it to the trauma intensive care unit about 3:00 am.  The nurses and doctors in this unit have been fantastic.

Where do we stand now - In the ICU they have been keeping his blood pressure and heart rate within a very small range to help control bleeding and to improve his breathing.  He is on a respirator and they have very gradually adjusted its settings because of the injuries to his lungs he was not breathing well on his own. Corey will have surgery on the liver on Monday.  This is his most critical injury and must be stabilized before they can do anything with the broken bones.

As of Sunday morning there have been no real changes.  His nurse this morning told us that he had reduced the sedative slightly and Corey appeared to not be so deeply sedated.  He would not respond to verbal commands but he felt this was more from attitude than from an inability to do so.  If you know Corey, you know this is probably true.  I will try to update this web site as updates become available.  Right now the best thing we can do for Corey is pray for him.  Thank you for your love and support. they do not know the full extent of his injuries quite yet. coreys got a long tough road ahead of him and unfortanetly does not have health insurance... so please help. hes a 21yr old kid with the biggest heart and hard working work ethics and he does not deserve this. hes had a tough life growing up already, so lets try to make it a little bit easier on him and his family. He is taken care of by his grandparents so all proceeds will go straight to them.
