Collins' Broken Leg

This is Collins Omwando, age 12.  I met him a few weeks ago in Kenya.  Collins has a broken leg and needs our help to get treatment.  He broke it after falling out of a tree on October 19th while picking avacados to help feed his family.  His single mother took him to a hospital, but except for taking x-rays they did not have enough money to set the leg.   He sat in the hospital for two months, but nobody knew what to do, so he was sent home with a crutch.   It was still broken when I met him on February 4th.  The right femur is completely snapped appart and is almost sticking out of his flesh.   Treatment will require stretching the leg out and placing metal braces around the bone after its set in position.     When I spoke with him, Collins wasn't in pain, but he sure seemed sullen and depressed.  At that moment I placed my hand on his head and pledged to make sure he would get proper care.  


I have arranged with his pastor, Christiano Mboyi, and  organizations of good repute,  Codech Kenya and Tabitha Childhelp to get him to a hospital in Nairobi Kenya.   They prepared me an estimated bill of 162,500 Kenyan shillings which amounts to about $2,000 dollars after exchange rates and fees.   A small sum compared with what this would cost in America!   I just sent $200 for he and his mother's travel to Nairobi on  THIS Thursday the 19th - four months after the accident.   Very soon I'll need to send another  US$1,000 to Codech so that they can put a deposit down at the hospital.   They are estimating a 10 day stay at the hospital following the surgery.   The estimate includes transportation, admission fees, accomodations, food, consultations and xrays, and the actual surgery.
