I would like to introduce you to Lisa. Our most amazing, dedicated, hard working Baark! volunteer.
Lisa works tirelessly picking up and then returning dogs and cats that need to be spayed and neutered, rescuing so many out of bad situations, and also feeding strays on a daily basis around the island.
She is the kindest, most selfless person I have ever met and has changed the lives of so many animals. One remarkable story I would like to share is about Chowgirl.
Meet Chowgirl...
Lisa came across Chowgirl and her litter of pups, and realized that someone had tied a wire around her tongue and lower jaw. Lisa was able to rescue her and her pups and they all got amazing homes.
Chowgirl and her litter is just one of the many many stories Lisa could tell.
Life changed drastically for Lisa in October 2016 when New Providence was ravaged by Matthew, a category 5 hurricane. Lisa lives on the coast in a home she inherited from family. Over the years, Lisa has rescued many dogs and currently is the caregiver to 19 dogs. Although the property is not large, she is able to give each of them a home. Her dogs are her children and life. Whenever, hurricanes are approaching, Lisa transfers herself and all the dogs to safer grounds.
During hurricane Matthew, Lisa's entire backyard was washed out. The whole seawall from the east to the west was destroyed. It looked as if it had been excavated. The sea water was now rushing into the backyard, as there was no sea wall to protect the yard and keep the water out.
Since October, Lisa's dogs have been kept in boarding and she needs to bring them home and she needs your help!
We are so lucky to have Lisa driving the Baark! truck. In 2016 we provided 1,803 spay and neuters. We have currently assisted with spaying and neutering over 1,000 for 2017, saving so many lives. Without Lisa these numbers would not have been possible.
Lisa dedicates her life to helping those in need. And now she is in need. It will cost $28,000 to repair her seawall so she can get the dogs home.
We asked some of the animal community to describe Lisa... here is what they said...

She has the desire and and compassion that would exceed what the majority of us think we have. She always takes the side of the weak against the strong. "If Lisa isn't at work she's out trapping, feeding or saving the lives of animals!! She will go knock on the door of strangers to talk to them about the welfare of the dogs in their yard. She will try her best to get the owners of animals to agree to spaying or neutering their dog or cat. She doesn't give up!! "These past few months have really been hard on Lisa. She misses her dogs and just wants them back home with her. Lisa is the type of person who would go without to give to her dogs. I really hope she gets the help she needs so she can feel complete again. She just wants all her babies back home. She so deserves this help and more. "Are there enough wonderful and positive adjectives to describe the endless, tireless efforts of an individual by the name of Lisa Thurston? She works night shifts, sleeps very little in order to get out during the day to voluntarily pick up stray dogs, cats for our spay neuter program to help reduce the number of unwanted, stray canines and felines in this city. I am very fortunate to know Lisa Thurston and can think of no one more deserving for a 'go fund me' program. She needs our help just as she has helped the community of Nassau and all the animals!
