Adrien was born with a hole in the middle of his heart. Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a cardiac anomaly that refers to a combination of four related heart defects that commonly occur together. Up until this point in his young life he has not been able to play as other children can. When he exerts energy like playing, running, coughing and crying his nails and lips turn blue because they are not receiving oxygen in adequate amounts. This has been difficult for Adrien because he is often left behind with friends and cannot play and enjoy life as other children do.
When Adrien was born several doctors advised his parents Marilyn and Arnold that, in some cases the hole in his heart could close and resolve itself. Unfortunately, this never happened and his heart condition is worsening, causing the right side of his heart to become enlarged as it has to work so hard to maintain adequate blood flow.
Adrien’s condition has been a daily struggle as the family has tried to meet his physical, emotional and mental needs. They are diligent in following the advice of the heart doctor and attended monthly check-ups at the Heart Specialist clinics.
Now at the age of 6, Adrien will need heart surgery done as soon as possible.
The operation will take place at the Philippine Heart Center in Manila.
The surgery alone will cost 500k peso’s. This amount excludes any other medical expense; such as medications and hospital length of stay, as well as accommodation for the family. They are travelling from a different island of the Philippines to receive this surgery. Adrien and his family will need to stay in Manila for a month after the surgery for recovery and medication management.
Marilyn and Arnold are in desperate need of help as they do not have this kind of money. They have been saving and Arnold has had to find work overseas. He is often away from his family for extended periods of time just to provide basic necessities as well as the care that Adrien’s medical condition has required. They have been struggling with financial stress for some time now.
TIME is a big factor and we need to come up with the full amount for the operation as soon as possible. If the surgery does not take place there will be further complications eg. to the brain, heart failure, and a very high chance he will not survive to adulthood.
Thankfully, the doctors have advised that this surgery will permanently fix Adrien’s heart!
