LINDA'S STORY by Mary McGrath
My dear friend of 25 years, Linda Burrough, has been fighting cancer for the past 3-1/2 years. Linda was first diagnosed with Stage IV Uterine Endometrial Carcinosarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in March of 2014, right around her 58th birthday, and she had her first surgery, a hysterectomy, the following month.
LINDA'S TREATMENT
Since 2014, Linda has had numerous treatments: chemotherapy; a 2nd surgery the following year after her cancer had spread to pelvic lymph nodes; radiation; and cyberknife treatments.
When Linda's doctors found that her cancer had spread once again this past summer, they started more chemo but it wasn't working this time. She was referred to Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) and her new doctors found that her cancer had mutated to an extremely rare mesophrenic carcinoma, and that she also had a tumor in her lung with fluid accumulation. A lung biopsy was performed in September (waiting for results) and over 1 liter of fluid was drained from her lung.
A new chemotherapy was started at MSK, a combo of Avastin and Gemcitabine, with treatments given 2 out of every 3 weeks.
Throughout all of this, Linda has continued to work full time at the doctor's office where she's been employed for 30 years. She never complains and when you ask her how she is doing, she will tell you she is lucky because she hasn't had some of the bad side effects some others experience.
ANOTHER SETBACK TO THEIR FAMILY
Linda's husband, Kevin, lost his job when the company he worked for closed. He has been working at a couple of part time jobs, but Linda is the one with the health care benefits for the family. Kevin suffered a stroke this past June, and spent a week in ICU. Fortunately, Kevin has done well with his recovery.
THE FOCUS ON RECOVERY
The time has come for Linda to focus solely on her battle. She will be leaving her job, going on disability, and with that, she will also be paying for COBRA to continue her health care insurance.
HOW YOUR DONATIONS WILL HELP
The money raised will help tremendously with Linda's medical expenses. While being treated at MSK she has 70/30 coverage because it is an out-of-network provider. Linda's policy has a $1000 per person deductible and she must meet $4000 out-of-pocket expenses, annually, before her insurance kicks in at 100% coverage.
Some of her recent out-of-pocket expenses are:
$845 for her initial MSK consult
$178 for her initial bloodwork
and she has yet to receive the bill for her CT scan and chemotherapy bills. Linda will also be paying over $750 per month for COBRA coverage. That's over $9000 per year. In addition, they are making monthly payments to payoff a $3940 bill for her husband's week long stay in ICU after his stroke.
Any donation, no matter how small, will help Linda in her time of need. She is truly appreciative that I have set up this page and asks for your prayers as well. All the money raised will go directly to Linda and I will provide periodic updates.
Linda has such a positive attitude, and as she says, "Attitude is everything". Just look at her smile in the picture with her holding her youngest grandchild, Logan!
