Help Zack overcome opioid addiction

To Zack's Loved Ones,

I Dream a World
                By Zack Williams age 10

I dream a world with no hate
I dream a world where there is no violence
I dream a world where you can walk on the streets safely
I dream a world where everyone gets along
I dream a world with peace

Everyone who knows Zack knows that the dream he had when he was 10 years old represents the core of who Zack is.  Seven years after he wrote that poem, Zack’s dream was shattered by an irresponsible doctor who prescribed hundreds of opioid (oxycodone) pills after Zack had some minor surgery.  The outcome was not surprising.  He began a journey down the very long, dark, painful road of opioid addiction.  For the last 15 years, despite his desires to be free of opioids and live the life he dreamed, despite seeing at least 10 of his friends die from the ravages of opioid addiction, Zack has been unsuccessful in his personal battle to beat opioid addiction.   It is a battle very few people win.

It is hard to fully comprehend the total destruction opioid leaves in its wake.  The absolute power of the drug destroys the kind, the sweet, the smart and the strong.

People like Zack are its innocent victims.

Current “solutions” to opioid addiction offer 2 options;

                 1.      Replace the opioid with methadone while you withdraw from the opioid.  The methadone of course creates its own addiction and the withdrawals and detox from methadone are more difficult than that of the opioids.
                 2.      Block the effects of the opioid using a drug called Suboxone which blocks the nerve receptors so if relapse occurs the “high” produced by opioids isn’t experienced.  Suboxone also creates its own addiction.

The success rate of opioid withdrawal using these two methods is measured in single digits.

There is a third option that has shown significantly higher success rates.  It is not offered in the United States.  It is based on the use of a drug called Ibogaine made from a plant in western Africa.  It allows the brain to restructure itself to a state similar to its state before addiction.  The most-studied therapeutic effect of ibogaine is the reduction or elimination of addiction to opioids. An integral effect is the alleviation of symptoms of opioid withdrawal. Research also suggests that ibogaine may be useful in treating dependence on other substances such as alcohol, methamphetamine, and nicotine.  It also provides for a more positive introspection to the challenges associated with addiction.  Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive substance found in plants.  It is classified as a Schedule 1 drug in the United States.

As all previous attempts to achieve withdrawal from opioids have failed for Zack, we have chosen to pursue Ibogaine treatment.    Zack believes it is his last and best hope.  Yes, it is expensive.  No, it is not covered by insurance.

We are all behind Zack.  We are tying to rescue him from the destruction of one of the most addictive drugs in the world.  Zack has so much to offer.  He is a peacemaker, a kind soul, a non-judgmental helping hand, someone who sees the world as it should be, and he is an addict.  If you are in a position to help financially, please help us bring him home.

Sincerely,

Bill Williams (Zack's father)

*EXTRA NOTES, PLEASE READ*
The funding we are asking for is a lot, this we know.  We have had a team of family members working with Zack since his overdose on May 17th that landed him in the hospital for almost a week.   We almost lost Zack.  We all feel the Ibogaine treatment is the best chance for Zack.  Zack has wanted this for years. Zack is also aware that the Ibogaine treatment is just step one of his recovery.  When he returns from his Ibogaine treatment, the real work begins.  His body will be clean, his cravings ceased and he will be ready for intense therapy.   He knows this, and in order to support his full recovery, intense therapy is mandated.  The Ibogaine Clinic will give recommendations for aftercare treatment and we want to be able to help him and not miss a beat, by having the finances to cover therapy for the first 2-3 months.  I, Jennifer Walter, will administer the funds for both the  Ibogaine treatment and the following therapy.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me, Jennifer Walter, directly.

We truly appreciate any support you might be able to offer, even if it is prayers.  Zack deserves our love and support because he is more committed to recovery now than anytime in the past.

Mahalo,
Jennifer
