Help Zaan walk, run and swim again!

People describe Zaan Scott as a humble, kind, strong, fit, and quiet man.  As a member of the Capitol Hill Community, he is a reliable coworker, great friend and fantastic swim coach at the Eastern Market Pool (William H Rumsey Aquatic Center) on Capitol Hill, where he has worked for more than four years. Zaan lifeguards, coaches kids and adult swim lessons, and is a helpful and friendly face at the pool for the entire community. Anyone who has gone swimming over the past four years has almost definitely encountered Zaan - he basically lived in the water!

On April 9th, on his way home after work in SE, he was approached by an armed assailant looking to rob him. A second assailant appeared out of the shadows and shot him in the back. Although the assailants did not take any of his material belongings before running away, they stole his health, independence, sense of safety and livelihood in that one moment when they fired the gun. Police are still looking for the gunmen.

The bullet shattered Zaan’s sixth vertebrae and severed half of his spinal cord. He is currently paralyzed from the waist down and is living in rehab until he is self sufficient again. He attends physical and occupational therapy three hours each day to rehabilitate his spinal cord injury and goes into each session challenging himself to work even harder than the last session. He is desperately clinging to the hope that he will walk again soon and hopes to be back in the pool as soon as possible. Although Zaan is strong and faithful, it will not be an easy road to recovery!

Zaan is in need of financial assistance to get him through this time of need, and he believes in the kindness of strangers, friends and his community.

We are hoping to raise money through this fund to cover the following:

**Relocation to a safe, wheelchair accessible community and apartment by June 1, 2017.
**Purchasing some of the costly equipment insurance will not pay for, but will be necessary for his rehabilitation (such as a portable commode, standing frame, tub chair, etc.).
**Funds to defray the costs of food, rent and other daily expenses since he will be out of work for a long time.

Please support Zaan by donating to this fund!

Any amount will help as he battles to walk again and to keep his spirits up in this time of need.

Zaan also welcomes visitors and asks you all to keep him and his recovery in your thoughts and prayers!
