I'm raising money on behalf of my partner Venus, also known as local Atlanta drag queen Xt Venus Valentine. On Saturday April 13, she was preparing for a show when she passed out and had a bad fall that gave her a black eye and broke three of her front teeth. After the fall she was unresponsive and had to be transported in an ambulance to Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center, where she spent the next few hours in their Level I Trauma Center until she woke up.
Venus was in the hospital for 2 nights and 3 days, during which time she underwent an ultrasound, an MRI, an echo test, two EKGs, overnight monitoring of her heart rhythm and a number of blood tests, many of which focused on her blood sugar and determining the stability of her glucose levels. We are very lucky that she has no broken bones or other serious injuries besides her teeth but her doctor was very concerned about why she passed out and what other health factors may have contributed to her accident.
We were able to determine that the most likely cause of Venus passing out was a combination of low blood sugar, dehydration, elevated heart rate and exhaustion but there is still the concern of a more chronic issue with her heart and glucose levels. Her doctor has requested that she come in for follow-up appointments to check her blood sugar and the cardiologist we spoke to strongly recommended further monitoring of her heart. This tells us that even though she was cleared to come home, the recovery process is going to be long-term.
In addition to her hospital stay, Venus will need major dental work to repair her three broken teeth, most likely in the form of crowns. A single crown can run between $800-$3000, depending on the dentist and damage to the tooth, but even at its cheapest this procedure will still be incredibly expensive.
Neither Venus nor I have health or dental insurance so facing down the bill for an ambulance, 2 nights in a hospital, bloodwork, ultrasounds, an MRI, EKGs, meds and an extensive dental procedure is daunting to say the least. We are applying for financial aid and patient assistance but we unfortunately have no way of predicting how that will turn out. In the meantime, we are asking our friends, family and community at large to please donate to Venus' medical fund so we can get her back on her feet and make sure she's as healthy as she can possibly be!
100% of the donations will go towards Venus' hospital and dental bills, meds and any follow-up care she may need. Any extra funds will go towards food, mental health services and generally supporting our little family while we are both away from our jobs during her recovery. Anything you can give helps, even if it's only a few cents - we are grateful for every bit of support we receive! If you can't afford to donate, please share this campaign across your social media accounts, or wherever you feel comfortable posting it.
I love Venus more than I can put into words and all I want is for her to be healthy, strong and back to doing what she loves the most. Let's get this incredible human and talented queen back on stage where she belongs!
