 Our sweet 11-year-old son, Xavier, is now facing the fight of his life after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer called malignant rhabdoid tumor.
</div>

 This all started in July when Xavier began complaining of what we thought was sciatica pain. At the end of July, he started football practice. During practice one Friday, Xavier “cramped out,” and his coach noticed what felt like a knot around his hip. When I went to check on him, I couldn’t feel anything unusual.

 The following day, his leg felt tight, although there was no obvious swelling. On Sunday, we took him to the ER. We were told that he likely had not stretched properly and that the knot could be a sports hernia. No imaging was done, and we were sent home.

 The next day, thinking it could be another flare-up of sciatica, we took him to a chiropractor. On Tuesday, we followed up with a nurse practitioner at a clinic, but we still didn’t have answers.
</div>

 On Wednesday, we went back to the chiropractor to discuss his X-rays. That evening, Xavier wanted to go to football practice. It was then that I noticed a significant difference in the size of his legs. Something in my heart told me that this was more than a sports injury.

 I rushed him back for medical care and demanded that we find out what was happening.
</div>
<div>
 <br>

 A CT scan revealed multiple masses and hematomas. Xavier was immediately transferred to CHRISTUS Children’s in San Antonio, where the medical team began an extensive workup.
</div>

 <br>
</div>
<div>
 At first, lymphoma was one of the possibilities being considered. A chest X-ray did not show anything concerning. However, the doctors repeated his imaging with an ultrasound and CT of his abdomen and pelvis, along with a chest CT.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 That was when the oncologist came to us with devastating news: they had found a mass in his chest.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 The reason it had not been seen on the initial X-ray was because the mass was positioned between his rib cage and heart.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 Xavier underwent a biopsy, and after waiting on pathology, we received the diagnosis no parent ever wants to hear:

<div>
 Malignant rhabdoid tumor.
</div>
<div>
 <br>
</div>
<div>
 This is a rare cancer, and Xavier now faces an incredibly difficult road ahead. His treatment is expected to include approximately 8–10 months of chemotherapy, with additional treatment decisions being made by his oncology team as we learn more.
</div>

 We are praying with everything we have that chemotherapy will work and that our boy will be given the miracle we are desperately praying for.
</div>

 Xavier is a loving, strong, and courageous 11-year-old who loves football, gaming, and spending time doing the things kids his age should be doing. He attends Comfort Middle School, but because of his illness and the number of appointments, hospital stays, treatments, and absences, he has had to step away from school.
</div>

 Right now, our family’s entire focus is getting Xavier through treatment and giving him every opportunity to fight this cancer.
</div>

 But we are going to fight with everything we have.
