On Tuesday, December 23, I said a heartbreaking goodbye to my sweet boy, Mars. Just a few days earlier, he had some GI issues and started breathing heavily, so I rushed him to the emergency vet. I was hoping it was just an upset tummy, something he’d had before, and that we’d be sent home with some probiotics. But the reality was devastating—Mars was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive cancer, and we were told he only had days left with us. He was just 7 and had shown no signs before this, so the news was a complete shock. The vet made him comfortable, and I brought him home for his last days, filling them with special treats, nonstop cuddles, and so much love. On Tuesday, it was clear his discomfort had returned, and I knew it was time to say goodbye. Letting Mars go was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I find peace knowing he’s free of pain. He has always been my earth angel, and now he’ll just be my angel. As we drove to the vet, the sky was filled with beautiful rays of sunlight, and I believe they were there to welcome him. Mars was the gentlest soul I’ve ever known—pure love and joy, always eager to please. He taught me so much about love. He loved to talk, play, and snap his teeth together like an alligator, making me laugh every day. He stayed close when I was sad, gave the best hugs, and was my perfect little spoon. I will love him forever, and our souls will never be apart. I am heartbroken and grieving, but I’m hanging in there thanks to the love and support of my partner, friends, family, and community. We honored our angel boy by having the sweetest holiday we could, just as Mars would have wanted. His final days, so full of love, were the best Christmas gift I could have asked for. The emergency vet bills and end-of-life care have created unexpected expenses, and any support will help bring some ease to our hearts. Thank you for your kindness and support during this difficult time.
