Recently, our father Michael Kelly fell seriously ill. It began with flu-like symptoms, and by the start of the following week he was so sick that when he tried to walk up our stairs to his bedroom for some rest, he suffered a stroke just halfway up, requiring 911 to be called and a paramedic to bring him to the nearest hospital. After a terrifying morning of multiple CPR sessions and the use of 9 different medicines to maintain his heart rate and blood pressure, he managed to make it to the hospital's ICU. After spending four days there, making slow but steady progress to normal levels, he was stable enough to transfer to a larger hospital, better equipped to tend to his condition. They were finally able to conduct a CT scan, figuring out that it was, in fact, a stroke which caused this. Now, most of his levels have returned to stable levels, and he has been reduced to just two remaining medications. The only serious issue remaining is with his kidneys, so he will be starting dialysis today.

This all has happened just a month before we planned to bring together our entire family, including all of his children and grandchildren, for the first time. This series of events has forced this gathering a month early, under much more stressful circumstances, as it was uncertain whether he would survive the ordeal. The urgency of his situation required him to be taken to the nearest hospital, which our family's insurance does not cover. This, combined with all family members missing work to be by his side, has resulted in our inability to afford the extensive care he has received.
