I’m reaching out with a heavy heart, as my beautiful and brave horse, Whiskey Girl, needs our help more than ever. Whiskey has been a part of our family for over 15 years. She came to us as an off-the-track Thoroughbred, a rescued racehorse who had already endured so much before finding a safe, loving home. My son initially rescued her, and I took over her care when he moved away. She’s been my best friend ever since.

Recently, Whiskey has been struck by an incredibly serious and contagious illness called Strangles. Despite protocols at the barn to quarantine new horses, somehow this disease made its way in. Initially, Whiskey's symptoms were just a mild fever and a cough, but soon she became much sicker. After a series of complications, the vet discovered that she also has Purpura Hemorrhagica, a severe and life-threatening condition linked to Strangles.

Despite a few good days, Whiskey’s health deteriorated rapidly. Her legs became swollen and painful, and her body and face were covered in large, swollen edema bumps. The situation worsened when she started coughing up large amounts of blood and mucous, making it difficult for her to breathe. Her condition became critical, and she was rushed to New Bolton, an equine medical center, for emergency care.

When she arrived at the hospital, Whiskey was in respiratory failure, struggling to breathe, unable to move, and in a lot of distress. Thankfully, her condition has stabilized, and she is no longer in organ failure, but this is only the beginning of her fight. Whiskey still cannot swallow due to the severe inflammation in her throat. She has a feeding tube in place for now, but this can only be temporary.

There’s still hope, but the cost of her treatment is an overwhelming $1,000 a day. We’re doing everything we can to give her the best chance at recovery, but I cannot do it alone. Whiskey is a fighter, and she deserves every chance to get back to the horse she once was.
