Help Wayne battle Stage 4 cancer

Donation protected
Why am I sponsoring – together with Jamie, a sister of Wayne Rush, a Go Fund Me campaign to help Wayne battle advanced prostate cancer? Further, why are Jamie and I asking you to join us?

Admiral James Stockdale summed it up. Asked how he was miraculously able to both survive torture and lead men in barbaric conditions as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese, he responded with what has become known as the Stockdale Paradox: “You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end—which you can never afford to lose—with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”

This is the amazing attitude of my brother-in-law, Wayne Rush. Wayne, a superbly talented man of few words, found himself sitting in front of an oncologist a few months ago. The news was not good.

Wayne, who as a sought-after framer and builder has left his mark all over northern Indianapolis and Carmel – including the 20,000 sq. ft. home of a former Indiana Governor, was told that he had advanced prostate cancer.

Brutal facts

Advanced, as in chemotherapy can only “buy you some time.” Wayne’s cancer is pegged as a Gleason 9. Ten is as high as the scale goes. Above a five means you are in serious trouble.

Prevail in the end

But Wayne has not given up. Finishing up his first round of multi-month chemo this September, Wayne feels it. A talented builder, despite the pain and tiredness chemo brings, Wayne still swings a framing hammer and keeps at his senior restoration job with JL Fox.

Semper Fi

That’s what they taught him in his four-year stint in the Marine Corps.

But Wayne is realistic. He knows that this string has an end. He’s looking hard at different options, some in Europe and elsewhere. Some have promising, and reasonably documented, results. But they all cost money, a lot more than is available with his health insurance.

Wayne is a quiet guy who, like any other cancer patient, didn’t deserve this. He’s helped many people. As in a lot. Both his sister Jamie (my wife) and I and our extended family are included in that number. I believe now is the time for some healthy payback.

Yes, there are a million worthy causes in this world. But Wayne has quietly done his bit for many, many people. Now I humbly hope some will be motivated to show him that it was all worthwhile.

Wayne’s cancer has spread to his spine and jaw. It’s a classic Stage Four. There is not a lot of time left.

But there are survivors, even in this late stage. Wayne can be one of them. I ask you to join us in trying to give a worthy Marine a boost. Even if you can’t give money, please at least share this so powerful prayers can be offered up for Wayne and his healing.

Thank you in advance. And keep coming back to learn how Wayne’s journey is progressing. The Stockdale Paradox is true.
