Help Vanessa win the cancer battle

Hi, my name is Vanessa. I'm Brazilian, I'm 35 years old and since 2017 I’ve been living in this incredible country Australia.

3 years ago I decided to seek a new path and a new beginning outside my country. It was a dream come true, from when my visa was approved until the moment I landed here in Sydney! Some people said that I was crazy moving countries and starting over again from scratch in another place without friends and family. But I had courage and I really believed that everything was going to work out, and it did!

In the beginning it was very hard in Australia. With a new language and new culture, it was very difficult to adapt. But I didn’t give up.

Many times doors to jobs closed and I faced professional challenges that I never imagined I would face! Preconceptions and lack of information often knocked me down, but each time I got up and moved on.

Every challenge in my life I use as fuel to win!

At the beginning of this year, to my surprise, I was offered work in my profession. I was so happy and grateful ... Finally, every fight and all the loneliness I experienced as an immigrant were paying off! At first the position offered was on a temporary basis in a large company.

I started to work and rent a small apartment, and everything was going well. At the beginning of June, in the bath, doing a self-examination, I noticed a little lump in my right armpit. Worried, I went to my GP, who immediately requested several exams. To my surprise my right armpit (in which I had felt a lump) was OK, but my left side wasn’t. After a few weeks of waiting, my most painful journey began. I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

It was shocking and sad news, especially as I was alone in another country, without my family and friends around me, and, due to the pandemic, I was unable to bring over someone from my family to take care of me ... At that moment, a film played in my mind, as if it were a flashback, of my whole struggle, my dreams and where I had got to and everything seemed to go underwater.

My GP promptly referred me to an oncologist to start treatment. Once again, I raised my head and kept going, as I needed to.

I am very fortunate to have a medical surgeon like Dr. Chris and his team at the Royal Hospital for Women [OR Prince of Wales Hospital] in Randwick. Although it appears to be at an early stage, they have recommended that I start treatment with surgery to try to remove the cancer. It is a malignant breast cancer that’s about 1.5cm.

Part of the cost of the surgery will be covered by my health insurance company NIB. Nevertheless, I have to pay $700 to the hospital before the surgery, which will be on 24 July. In addition, I will start radiotherapy treatment that unfortunately will not be covered by my health insurance.

Fortunately surgeons in Australia have excellent and extensive experience treating breast cancer. So, following the recommendation of my doctors, I’ve decided to stay and do all the treatment in Sydney, because of the infrastructure and treatment cost (in Brazil it would be even more expensive), in order to not interrupt my studies and mainly to not run back to Brazil knowing the current state of the country's health system .

During this period, I lost my job. Honestly, at the moment I don't know how everything is going to go, and, besides the treatment and other surgeries that I may need, I still have to pay rent and my course fees and buy food.

Some friends have encouraged me to create this page so that I can try to raise money to help me during this difficult time.

Any donation is welcome. I am very grateful because, despite everything that is happening, I can be treated here, and I have wonderful friends who are already helping and encouraging me a lot. That has been very important to me!

Thank you for everything from the bottom of my heart and I end this statement with a phrase I love

"Winter never fails to become spring"
