<div>My partner, Alex, has been suffering significant blood loss every few months starting in December of 2023, just a few days before Christmas. He'd been extremely lightheaded, dizzy, and was struggling to do the simple things like walking up and down the stairs, so he went to the ER. His hemoglobin was a 4.9, meaning he was missing about 2/3 of his blood. He got blood and iron transfusions like he needed, then went home thinking this was the first and last time this would happen.

<div>When Alex went to the ER for the first time in December of 2023 he did not have health insurance that was promised by his employer at the time. That trip to the ER ended in a $30,000 bill, and it was only the beginning. We have been struggling to pay our bills and stressing about getting Alex back to get the transfusions he needs because we know he needs them, but we can’t afford it.

<div>This most recent time, August 4th of 2025, will have been the 5th time he's gone for a low hemoglobin and has now had 9 bags of blood. The blood loss is becoming more frequent and we don't know why. The only plus side to it all is 4.9 is the lowest he's ever been, but he's still getting extremely low, usually missing about half of his blood. It's taking a toll on his body, his job, but most of all our finances. Every time we think we have a leg up, we have to go back to the ER. More copays, more blood and iron, more bills being put on hold, less work, less money coming in.
