Hi, my name is Dr. Claire Young and I am a Family Physician from Kelowna.

For the past 5 weeks, I have been working as a medical volunteer at the Roberto Clemente Clinic , located in a very poor, rural area in Santa Ana (near Popoyo) Nicaragua.

The schoolchildren desperately need water.

Nothing special.

Just clean, potable water to stay healthy.

Roberto Clemente Clinic

Not only does Roberto Clemente Clinic provide consultations to the surrounding communities, but it also runs a number of amazing and invaluable programs to support this incredibly resource-poor area. They have a nutrition program where they donate rice, beans, cornflour, and sugar to the poorest people on a monthly basis. Often this is the only food they have and it doesn’t last them the month. I have no idea what they do when it’s all gone.

That's the food. But what about the water?

Most people here drink water from heavily contaminated wells and I witnessed the adverse consequences of this on a daily basis. People are getting sick, purely from contaminated well water, but they have zero other water options.

The Roberto Clemente Clinic set up a program to distribute clean water to schools and health centres from their water treatment facility. For most of the children, this is the only access they have to clean, safe drinking water. The clinic currently provides water to four of the eight schools in the area. They told me they want to cover all eight schools but in order to do so, they need to purchase new water filters and employ a dedicated individual to run the labour intensive water program full time. Sanitizing the bottles and system, filtering the water through a multi-stage filtering system, filling the bottles and distributing these to local schools.

What we need.

I asked how much this program would cost. They told me they need $1,000 for the filters and $330 per month for the wages of the person the run the water program. A considerable sum in Nicaraguan terms, and impossible on the budget of an NGO (Non-Government Organisation) clinic in poor rural areas without help from people like us.

I have decided to try and raise this money for them. They have been so welcoming and accommodating to me since I arrived, and I can't think of a better payback than arranging for the amazing children, women and men in this community to have regular access to clean water.

So, how much?

My plan is to raise $5000.

- $1000 for replacement water filters
- $4,000 to cover a salary for someone to roll out the program for one year.

Once the fund has hit its target the money will be forwarded to the Roberto Clemente Clinic directly. In the event that the fund does not hit it's target quickly, we will send the money in stages and update our Facebook pages and the information on this page to let people know how much has been sent.

Water. The most basic of human needs. Please give what you can.
