HELP US SUPPORT PROTESTORS IN CALI, COLOMBIA

Dear friends and family,

HELP US SUPPORT PROTESTORS IN CALI, COLOMBIA

Since April 28, 2021, Colombians have been in the streets participating in a historic national strike. The national strike aims to protest a tax reform that intends to raise taxes by 19% on basic consumer products such as public services (water, electricity, and gas), funeral services, electronic objects such as computers, and other items so far exempted. All of this in the middle of a COVID-19. So far around 30 protestors have been murdered by either police or the Mobile Anti-Disturbances Squadron, most commonly known as Escuadrón Móvil Antidisturbios (ESMAD). Hundreds of others have been injured and continue to be brutalized in the streets, which is why we are organizing from the United States, to direct funds to front and second line protestors. We want the funds to go towards protective gear, first aid supplies, and food for community pots.

Who is the money going to?
Community organizers we are identifying, many of which we cannot name for their safety. In the last couple of days, organizers have faced police and military threats, among others. There are currently no organizations that we know of whose sole purpose is to collect funds for these purposes. We are directing these funds to front-line nurses, community leaders, and organizers, and others who we know are doing the work on the ground.

How are the funds being handled?
We are withdrawing the funds daily and either sending it directly to organizers or buying the items ourselves and delivering them. It is quite difficult to reach most places in the city, so it is easier to transfer the funds to organizers in each crisis neighborhood directly so that they may buy supplies directly.

Thank you in advance!
