Hello, friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers,
I’m reaching out today to share a heartbreaking situation involving my dear Grandpa, Papa Mike, who has always been the most loving, caring, and trustworthy man in my life. If you knew me as a kid, you knew he was like a father to me.. and to this day he is one of my favorite people to be around. On March 31, 2025, he fell victim to a devastating scam that has left us upset and violated - I’m asking for you to help me support him.
The scammers used a call to manipulate my Papa into believing I was in serious trouble. They impersonated me, using my voice in a distressing call that said I had been involved in a car accident, at fault for the death of an eight month pregnant woman, and was in jail. The caller told him that I needed $10,000 for bail and that I didn’t want anyone, including my husband, to know. They convinced him that he needed to withdraw cash so it would not be traced or questioned + alert my husband, and to have it ready for someone to pick it up from his house.
Soon after, a man in a silver sedan arrived at his home, continued the lie, and took $10,000 in cash from my Grandpa. As hard as it is to believe, these scammers used MY voice, and even a local number to make the story seem legitimate. They knew where he lived, drove there and took his money from his hands in broad daylight. My grandpa was convinced he was helping me in my time of need.
If you’ve ever met my Papa Mike, you know he is the kindest, funniest, and most generous soul. He would do anything to help the people he loves, and it breaks my heart that someone took advantage of his love and trust. He and my Grandma are both retired and live a modest life, they have lived in their little home since before I was born. I am deeply hurt by someone taking $10,000 of their hard earned/saved money, and beyond the money they were violated at their own front door. It is hard to imagine.
The Roseville Police Department are actively investigating the situation, reviewing cameras in their neighborhood, and doing all they can to track down these criminals. Unfortunately, because they used a fake number, and picked up cash, it’s been challenging to trace them.
We are asking for your support to help ease the burden this has caused. The $10,000 stolen from them is money they use to pay for their own bills, including paying for our extended family's housing/ medical care. Any donation, no matter how small, will go directly to helping them recover this money.
Please share this with others, as spreading awareness about these types of scams can help prevent them from happening to others. Unfortunately these calls often happen to elderly people, and they prey on them by using their kids, grandkids, etc. and paint a picture of a story that puts their emotions first causing these tragic scams to be successful. When I asked how he could possibly have believed them he said, "Kid, it was your voice. I thought you were talking to me, and you told me you needed my help so there was no question."
I appreciate all of the love & support that has already been shown.
With gratitude,
Mikayla Jansen
