My name is Sarah and I am the founder of Berlin based specialty coffee and brunch place HOME: Brewing & Kitchen. We have been around for over 4 years now. During this time, we have worked hard to become a recognisable specialty coffee shop in Berlin. In the progress of the years, together with my partner Agnieszka, we put a significant effort in bringing both locals, neighbours and coffee community together. Last year alone we organised and hosted several coffee events - for fun, for education, for the sake of inclusivity in coffee world, for opening people to each other. We had guests from Spain, Switzerland and Costa Rica coming and giving interviews and coffee cuppings for you.

Because of Corona virus, times are tough for everyone but especially employers and expats with a small gastronomy business in Berlin. I have lived in Germany for over 9 years now, around a quarter of my life. Yet, I would lie if I said that it makes living here easy. My shop is a sustainable business where I can offer a fair salary to experienced, reliable and kind baristas working for us.
My personal income after years of hard work was modest but sustainable - but I have never been in a position to financially plan ahead even if I knew the world-wide pandemic was coming.
Here is the short background to help everyone understand how much more of a social engagement it is to run a small local business here rather than a great source of income. I am actively securing rights and income of my employees - but my own existence is not secured or supported in any way so far.
I asked my cafe landlord for a reduction of rent for the time when we need to be shut down - no reply. Governmental support programs for small businesses have not launched yet and there is no guarantee I will be eligible for them. I have rent and bills to pay like the rest of us. I am positive about getting the opportunity to get some financial support for maintaining and re-opening the cafe after the pandemic is over - but there is no personal support available to me running a small business. I am not unemployed and I do not pay myself a wage. I am somewhere in the middle, where I have obligations towards other people but no support.
If you are in a place to place any donation to support my cause and help an independent, local specialty coffee shop stay around, that would mean a lot.
