As a high school educator one of my greatest joys and challenges has been becoming a debate coach. Debate is not in my background however I knew that the students I serve would benefit tremendously from participating in policy debate. Policy Debate helps illustrate our system of government for students. It also exposes students to a whole new world of vocabulary. Debate has been an agent for change and recovery for my students.
We have only been a debate team 3.5 years and in the time my students have competed in more than 200 rounds of policy debate, more than a 1000 hours of reading to prepare (in and out of the classroom.) In that time we have competed at the state and national level. Although the resources available to us are extremely minimal and yet we continue to rise. What we lack in resources we make up for in effort, grit and determination.
Our debate captain, C.J. Padillow, has earned an opportunity to attend Kansas University's prestigious Summer Debate Camp. The Jayhawk Debate Institute at the University of Kansas is a premier high school debate camp providing first class instruction at an exceptional value. The JDI offers students of all levels of debate experience the opportunity to further their development through a low student-to-staff ratio and interaction with exceptional faculty. Over the history of the JDI, students attending the camp have garnered strong competitive records at national and regional competitions.
The camp tuition a total of $1900.00. Tuition with Room & Board includes a renovated dorm room, and 3 meals a day during the week with two meals on the weekend (brunch and dinner). The cost of the camp remains lower than many other camps in the country.
PLEASE HELP US SEND C.J. TO SUMMER DEBATE CAMP SO HE CAN BRING THE KNOWLEDGE BACK TO THE ENTIRE TEAM!
