THE STORY
The Union of the People Affected by Texaco – now Chevron, UDAPT – this May 21, for the sixth consecutive year, is organizing the Global Day Antichevron. As the headquarters of the organization, that represents more than 30,000 people affected by the toxins left by Chevron in our jungle, find themselves in the city of Lago Agrio, Ecuador, on this occasion it is expected that at least 500 people from both indigenous and peasant communities will mobilize.
Dozens of people die each year from cancer, leukemia and other diseases linked to the toxins thrown by Chevron in the Amazon rainforest. On the other hand, the affected, peasants and indigenous people, for 26 years have waged a legal, political, communication battle, from their own reality, with their limited resources, but with great dignity and courage, knowing the asymmetry that exists between the oil company and themselves.
As a result of that struggle, in June 2018, the Ecuadorean Constitutional Court confirmed the judgement of the National Court of Justice, appealed by Chevron, that condemned the US oil company to pay $9,5 billion to repair for the environmental, cultural, and human damages that affected more than 30,000 people in an area of 480,000 hectares (approximately 1,2 million acres).
Instead of paying for its crime, the multinational corporation fled the country and planted an international arbitration against the Ecuadorean State with the aim of annulling the judgment. In August 2018, under the unjust system of the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS), a Court of arbitration ordered the Government of Ecuador to annul the Ecuadorean judgment, also demanding a multimillion-dollar compensation to Chevron.
It is unacceptable that the interests of multinational corporations prevail over the respect of Human Rights. For this reason, this year, on May 21 under the slogan “Rights for people, rules for corporations! Stop ISDS!”, hundreds of the affected people of the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador and Colombia will march on foot and by bicycle, to demand respect for our rights.
THE EVENT
Starting with a march, the participants will gather in Lago Agrio’s central park, where UDAPT representatives and allies will present their struggle to the audience. After lunch, consisting of typical local gastronomy, there will be a show of indigenous music, dance and artisanal products, to close the day in a jubilant mood. More than 500 people from all over the country are expected, with brotherly indigenous tribes coming even from bordering Colombia. The event will be completely plastic-free and participants will bring their own cutlery.
Curiosity: the date of May 21st was chosen to exert pressure on Chevron’s shareholders meeting, occurring on the last Wednesday of May every year.
WHAT IS THE MONEY FOR?
The town of Lago Agrio finds itself in a poor rural area in the Province of Sucumbíos, Ecuador. This corner of the Amazon is very difficult to access, its only link with the rest of the country being Quito, the Capital, at more that 7 hours by bus. Due to pavement condition, the town is also hard to reach from the main nearby settlements and provinces, the average trip being around 2-3 hours.
Moreover, as most of the attenders will come from indigenous and peasant communities, one lost day of work represents an important sacrifice that they only make because of the great importance they give to a struggle they have been bringing forward for more than 25 years.
For this reasons, UDAPT is taking charge of all the costs of the event, but lack of resources has led us to create this call.

The Ecuador environmental disaster is considered the world's largest oil related catastrophe, though it is not "ranked" because it was the product of deliberate planning to cut costs rather than a spectacular accident, like the Exxon Valdez spill or the BP Deepwater Horizon.

La Unión de los Afectado/as por Texaco – hoy Chevron, UDAPT – Este 21 de mayo, por sexto año consecutivo, está organizando el Día Global Antichevron. Al ser la ciudad de Lago Agrio, Ecuador, la sede de la organización, que representa los más de 30.000 afectados y afectadas, en esta ocasión se espera que se movilicen al menos 500 personas tanto de los pueblos indígenas como campesinos de distintas comunidades afectadas por los tóxicos dejados por Chevron en nuestra selva.
Cada año mueren decenas de personas con cáncer, leucemias y otras enfermedades vinculadas a los tóxicos arrojados por Chevron en la selva tropical amazónica. Por otra parte, los afectados, campesinos e indígenas, desde hace 26 años emprendieron una batalla jurídica, política, comunicacional, desde su propia realidad, con sus limitados recursos, pero con mucha dignidad y valentía, sabiendo la asimetría que existe entre la petrolera y los afectados.
Como producto de esa batalla, en junio de 2018, la Corte Constitucional de Ecuador confirmó la sentencia de la Corte Nacional de Justicia, apelada por Chevron, que condenó a la compañía petrolera estadounidense a pagar $9,5 mil millones para reparar a los daños ambientales, culturales y humanos que todavía afectan a más de 30,000 personas en un área de 480,000 hectáreas (aproximadamente 1,2 millones de acres).
En lugar de pagar por su crimen, la corporación multinacional se fué del país y estableció un arbitraje internacional contra el Estado ecuatoriano con el objetivo de invalidar la sentencia. En agosto 2018, bajo el sistema injusto de Solución de Controversias entre Inversionistas y Estados (ISDS), un tribunal arbitral ordenó al gobierno de Ecuador de anular la sentencia ecuatoriana y le demandó una compensación multimillonaria hacia Chevron.
Es inaceptable que los intereses de las corporaciones multinacionales prevalescan sobre el respeto de los Derechos Humanos. Por ello, en éste año, el 21 de mayo bajo el lema “¡Derechos para las personas, reglas para las empresas!”, cientos de afectados y afectadas de la selva amazónica del Ecuador y Colombia, marcharemos a pie y en bicicleta, para exigir respeto a nuestros derechos.
EL EVENTO
Comenzando con una marcha, los participantes se reunirán en el parque central de Lago Agrio, donde los representantes de UDAPT y sus aliados presentarán su lucha al publico. Después del almuerzo, que consistirá en gastronomía típica local, habrá un espectáculo de música indígena, danza y productos artesanales, para cerrar el día de manera divertida. Se esperan más de 500 personas de todo el país, con comunidades indígenas provenientes incluso de la frontera con Colombia. El evento será completamente libre de plástico y los participantes traerán sus propios cubiertos.
Curiosidad: la fecha del 21 de mayo se eligió para ejercer presión sobre la junta de accionistas de Chevron, que se lleva a cabo el último miércoles de mayo de cada año.
¿PARA QUÉ ES EL DINERO?
La ciudad de Lago Agrio se encuentra en una zona rural pobre de la Provincia de Sucumbíos, Ecuador. Este rincón del Amazonas es muy difícil de acceder, su único vínculo con el resto del país es Quito, la capital, a más de 7 horas en autobús. Debido a la condición de las carreteras, también es difícil llegar a la ciudad desde los principales pueblos y provincias cercanas, ya que el viaje promedio es de aproximadamente 2-3 horas.
Además, como la mayoría de los asistentes provendrán de comunidades indígenas y campesinas, un día perdido de trabajo representa un sacrificio importante que solo hacen debido a la gran importancia que le dan a la lucha que han estado llevando adelante durante más de 25 años.
Por estas razones, UDAPT se hace cargo de todos los costos del evento, pero la falta de recursos nos ha llevado a crear esta llamada.

El desastre ambiental de Ecuador se considera la mayor catástrofe del mundo relacionada con el petróleo , aunque no está clasificado porque fue producto de una planificación deliberada para reducir costos y no fue un accidente espectacular como el derrame del Exxon Valdez o la explosión de BP Deepwater Horizon.
