<div>In February, our mum, Dawn, was diagnosed with extensive small cell lung cancer, one of the most aggressive and conventionally incurable forms of cancer. Doctors gave her just 6 to 12 months to live. The standard NHS care plan? Four rounds of palliative chemotherapy – no more – alongside foreseeable immunotherapy.

<div>But Mum has never followed the rule book.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thanks to how well she was coping, and our persistence and advocacy with her oncologist, she wasn’t just offered more – she completed six full rounds of chemotherapy, something almost unheard of for this diagnosis.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>She has had an exceptional response to treatment – so exceptional that her NHS team agreed to treat her individually, offering her a rare combination of thoracic radiotherapy and immunotherapy, a treatment approach not routinely offered since the CREST trial in 2015.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Even her NHS oncologist, Dr Khan, has said that he believes it’s the combined approach of conventional and integrative care that has allowed Mum to respond so well. He has been amazed by her lung function test results, the significant reduction in cancer, the fact there’s been no spread, and that she has continued to work, stay strong, and experience no sickness or fatigue during her earlier chemotherapy rounds.

<div>In fact, her recent lung tests revealed something astonishing: she was previously diagnosed with COPD six years ago – and now, doctors say there’s no evidence she ever had it. Her lung function is better than it has ever been, and her team confirmed there’s no way she has COPD now, which only further proves how well this integrated approach is working.

<div>During the first four rounds of chemotherapy, Mum received multiple integrative IV therapies and treatments every week. The results were undeniable: she stayed strong, had no sickness, no fatigue, and her team were so impressed that they extended her treatment by two additional rounds.

<div>But by the fifth and sixth rounds, our funds had run low. We had to cut back on her IVs and therapies, and everything changed. She became noticeably weaker, and after her sixth round, she had to pause all further treatment, including the rare radiotherapy and immunotherapy that had been offered.

<div>Not because those treatments weren’t working – but because her body simply isn’t strong enough to continue right now.

<div>She now urgently needs to rebuild her immune system so she can resume treatment safely.

<div>Recently, we managed to get Mum away on a last-minute holiday to Menorca. It was just four nights, but it meant the world. Mum wanted to feel like life was normal again – and somehow, she was able to fly with her diagnosis and spend time with both of her daughters, bathing in the sea and resting under the sun.

<div>She slept, smiled, and soaked in the peace – and made memories that we’ll never forget.
</div>
<div>She didn’t want to come home.
</div>
<div>She didn’t want to return to the reality of cancer and hospital rooms and IV lines. And we know she worries about the money – which is why, as her daughters, we’re fighting harder than ever to show her that we will do everything in our power to give her the life she deserves.
