Help Us Save Our Grandma's Home

We are two undocumented recent grads who needs help saving our 90 year old grandmother’s home in the Philippines.

On June 25th, our grandmother received a notice that the house she has been living in for decades will be foreclosed in 15 days. Since migrating to the US from the Philippines, our mom had been sending money to our grandma, who’s been unable to work due to her age and debilitating health, and paying off the mortgage on her home despite living abroad. After our mom was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, she stopped working and could no longer provide the financial support.

After our mom passed away in 2016, we did the best we could to provide for our grandma’s living expenses. But we did not know that payments to the house were owed because we were never told the extent to which my mom provided for our grandma.

The mortgage has accrued to an exorbitant amount due to penalty fees and interest in the almost four years it’s gone without payment. The total amount due is about $9000 (converted to USD from PH peso). But we have only until July 9th to pay off the penalty fee at once, which is $3000, in order to stop the foreclosure and resume monthly payments.

Our grandma has lived alone since her son, our uncle, passed away in 2012. Being undocumented has prohibited us from reuniting with her and limited our own abilities of providing more money and support from far away. Our grandma has only managed with the help of neighbors and friends, who help with everyday errands such as buying groceries and cooking. If we lose the house, our grandma will not only lose her home but her community, whom she depends on for survival.

We are asking for help in raising this money due to our own limited incomes. While we do our best to provide for our grandmother’s monthly living expenses, we cannot take on these extra large payments without compromising our own survival in this country. While we have come to accept that we will not likely see our grandma soon, we want to be able to provide the comfortable life that she deserves in her old age.
