Part of what allows us to keep fostering and saving animals is the help of the community at times like these. Sometimes we need toys, other times peoples' time. Today, we are reaching out to you to see if you will help us with our $3,500 goal to pay for the medical care that can save Lobo's life.
We recently became aware of a brown Labrador puppy in urgent need of care. Two wonderful college students had rescued him, but had their hands too full to keep him and manage the medical needs. At only nine weeks old, Lobo has been diagnosed with giardia, intestinal parasites and, the real kicker, parvovirus.
For those of you who don't know of it, parvovirus is a virulent and deadly virus that destroys dogs' abilities to absorb the nutrients they eat, leaving them susceptible to dying of hunger and thirst. Puppies who contract the virus have about a 50 / 50 chance of surviving.
With Lobo taking a serious nosedive in health this morning, we had to act quickly and choose between two paths. The first would be to continue home treatment, where his chances of surviving are very iffy. Or, the second choice, we could bring him to the animal hospital for hospitalization that would drastically increase his chances of surviving.
We opted to give him the best chances of surviving, so he is now in the hospital.
As anyone knows who has owned a pet, having an outpatient disease like giardia or worms is costly. But when you have to admit the dog to the hospital, costs skyrocket.
In the few hours where Lobo was alert and healthy enough to hang out with us, we saw a really special dog that is worth saving. One that even in his worst of times, wags his tail and looks you sweetly in the eye.
