Help us rebuild our parks in Kailua Kona
PLEASE HELP US REBUILD OUR LOCAL PARKS!
Aloha Guys! My name is Maly Romero and I would like to invite our community to come together to help rebuild our local parks. Many local families depend on our public parks and their current conditions at the moment are UNACCEPTABLE!
On July 5th, I took my almost-three-year-old to Blue Park ( the park located in Pualani Estates) and I was shocked at the current conditions of the park. I reached out to the Parks Maintenance Division in Kona and I found out that there is no budget to help rebuild our parks.
On July 6th 2021, I took action and created a nonprofit organization called Kona Playgrounds Foundation. The paperwork has been filed with the state and the IRS and I am waiting for the 501c3 to arrive. In the meantime, I have created a board of directors for the foundation that is comprised of local moms who will work hard to make this dream a reality. 100% of the donations will go directly into helping rebuild our parks. This initiative will be funded by our community so please donate whatever you can.
Our local parks are in great need of repairs and what I mean by GREAT is the rubber surfacing is falling apart and there is currently plywood to cover the holes where the slides used to be at Blue Park. In order to improve the conditions of our parks, we need public funding to rebuild them.

Who will oversee the project?
Myself and the board of directors will be working closely with the county to bring this project to fruition and we will be involving the community as we progress with the project. I will also make sure that we are operating within the permitted parameters.
Which park would be rebuilt first?
Blue Park is in urgent need.
What happens if we raise more than what it cost to rebuild Blue Park?
All of the funds raised will be used for our parks in Kona. If we raise enough money to complete the project, keep in mind that we also need to have reserves to continue to maintain. I am still working with the county on these details and will update you all once we get all of these details.
Which company has been chosen to work on this project?
I reached out to the company that worked on rebuilding the Anuenue Playground in Waimea. The name of the company is called: Play by Design. Their work is incredible! We are in the very beginning stages of the conversations and they are quoting the project to be anywhere from 200K to 500K.
Has the mayor been reached?
Yes, I have requested a meeting to see the mayor to express this problem but I have not heard back.
