<div>I lost my cousin, and it still feels like a dream I can’t wake up from. He was only 20 years old. A Beaumont United High School graduate, Class of 2024. A good kid — respectful, humble, smart, and full of life. As soon as he graduated, he went straight to college in Arlington, chasing his future. He was just one week away from finishing. One week away from everything he’d worked so hard for.

<div>He went to the emergency room because he had COVID. They ran tests, kept him for a week, and then released him. We thought he was getting better. We thought the worst was behind us. But a week later, he collapsed in his dorm room. His friends called the ambulance and rushed him back to the same hospital.

<div>That’s when they told us he had blood clots in his lungs. I still can’t understand how they didn’t catch that the first time. How something so deadly could be overlooked. How a hospital could send a 20-year-old home with something that serious inside him.

They moved him to another facility without telling us first — before we could be there, before we could ask questions, before we could hold his hand and let him know he wasn’t alone.
