<div>Kass wasn’t just our cat — he was our Little Man.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>We adopted Kass from a shelter when he was about 3–4 years old. From the start, it was clear he’d already lived a harder life than most. He walked with a small limp from a broken leg he suffered when he was around one year old — an injury that was never properly treated. Because of that, Kass couldn’t jump or climb the way his curiosity begged him to. You could see it in his eyes: he wanted to explore everything.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>When Kass arrived at the shelter, he was labeled “high maintenance.” He had bald patches all over his body, and the assumption was that he had severe food allergies. We were told cats can’t be tested for allergens the way dogs can, so there was no way to know what food might be causing it. Chicken is often the culprit — but chicken is also used as filler in most cat foods. We did our research, tried different foods, and watched him closely. Nothing ever caused a reaction.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Something didn’t sit right with us.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>So we went back through his records. That’s when we noticed something important: Kass had come in with another cat from the same place. They weren’t related, yet both had the same bald patches. Then we saw the note — both cats were covered in fleas when they arrived. Kass didn’t have a food allergy at all. He had been eaten alive by fleas.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>That realization changed everything. Kass hadn’t been “difficult.” He had been neglected.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Once he was in our home, everything about him bloomed. He became our little gentleman — polite, patient, and deeply affectionate. He had a way of sitting perfectly upright in different spots to let us know exactly what he wanted: whipped cream, dry food, or wet food. When he first came home, he would only drink water from a bottle — something he learned from his new mom. Over time, he trusted more and more.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Kass was full of energy and always acted like a kitten. He loved soft things and made sure you knew it, kneading and vocalizing happily. Every night, he slept with us — often curled right into daddy’s face. He gave love freely, despite everything he had been through before we found him.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>After my husband’s heart event, Little Man Kass was always by his side, giving him love and letting my husband know he was there to support him. He would come up and bend his head slightly to get kisses on his forehead, and do soft nose bumps to express his love and support.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Due to medical and economic challenges, we found ourselves moving across the state to live with Angelica. Kass had met her many times before when she would visit her dad, but once we moved in, their bond grew quickly. He seemed to discover that she had one of the best laps he had ever encountered, and from that moment on, it became his favorite place to rest whenever she was nearby.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Then came the moment that changed everything. One day, Kass, after a long snuggle time with Dad, jumped to the floor and suddenly collapsed. We thought he was gone. His eyes were wide and unblinking, my husband picked him up and held him in his arms. His tail began to move and just as suddenly as he collapsed, he bolted up. It was truly a miraculous moment. He was blinking and looking around, reminding us of the fighting spirit he always carried. He wandered off, but a bit off-balance and went into the bathroom to lie down. He wanted to be alone. He wasn’t feeling well. That moment led us to the vet immediately.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>At the clinic, the vet discovered fluid around his heart and lungs, an enlarged heart, and a mass in his atrium. The diagnosis was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a condition that can strike suddenly and without warning. It can happen to any cat, regardless of care or lifestyle, and there is nothing an owner could have done to prevent it. This condition made him at risk of sudden collapse – or death if the mass dislodged - at any moment. It was a reality that broke our hearts.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Losing Kass was sudden and devastating. One moment he was with us, and the next everything changed. The shock and grief are something we’re still trying to breathe through. Now, the critical next step is preserving his cells so that a part of Kass can continue to be with us.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>What we do know is this: there is a very small, time-sensitive window to preserve Kass’s cells. This isn’t about replacing him. Kass was one-of-a-kind. Nothing will ever replace the way he loved us or the bond we shared. Preservation simply keeps the possibility open — a chance to carry forward the genetic legacy of a soul who survived hardship, learned to trust again, and loved deeply.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>I didn’t realize it at the time but he was an emotional support animal to the highest degree. He wasn’t registered, but he was always there for us - just as we were for him when he first joined our family. His absence is beyond devastating.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Right now, we are only asking for help with the cell preservation and storage costs. This is the urgent first step. Without preservation now, there is no option later — the door closes forever.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>If you choose to help, please know that you are helping us preserve hope during the hardest moment of our lives. And if you can’t donate, even sharing Kass’s story means more than we can express.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Thank you for taking the time to read about our little man. He gave us love beyond measure, and preserving his legacy is the only way to keep a part of him with us forever.
