Help us help - Sandy Offterdinger

Hello thank you for looking at our page. I'd like to introduce you to my neighbor Sandy Offterdinger, she's 70 years old and has lived in Sandy Spring for 17 years with her now late husband Hank. Hank was 85 and they would have celebrated their 37th anniversary this summer. 15 years ago Hank became house bound because of COPD AND EMPHYSEMA. Sandy quit her job as an executive secretary and became his only caretaker. They survived on their social security and some insurance sales which Hank continued to do from his home office. WHY WE ARE ASKING FOR HELP: To say the least Sandy has had a bad year. Last spring she was diagnosed with lymes disease . Then she had a kidney stone which really threw her for a loop . All the while still having to take care of Hank because his condition had greatly deteriorated. A few months ago she got a pinched nerve and herniated disk from lifting him. This made it impossible for her to really move, drive to get medicine. Let alone do laundry or get groceries. To make matters worse she woke up on May 7th to find Hank had passed in the middle of the night. Since they were already living on a very fixed income all extra expenses i.e. Life insurance and savings were transitioned out, to pay for Hanks care and secondary insurance. Which left nothing in savings to pay for Hanks service or her living expenses. So here she is : 70 years old hasn't worked in 15 years . Barely able to process one thing before the next thing happened. Sandy and Hank are proud people and had a really hard time asking for help. Now that Sandy is alone she living on one social security ( which hasn't come in yet because it will take some weeks to get that worked out) she's been unable to make her rent and take care of funeral expenses etc ... To top this all off a few weeks ago 2 young men broke into her home WHILE SHE WAS HOME . She literally had to chase them out! So she needed to do some repairs to the home to make it more secure. And then once she was finally able to drive herself she went to grocery store and the brakes went out on her 2000 ford escort. Which she can't afford to get out of the shop. We are asking for your kindness and support to help her get bake on her feet. Sandy is well aware she will need to get back into the work force now . But first she must get out from under this so called " bus of life" she is under. It's a tall order for 1 person to swoop in and help . So we are putting it out here into the universe because if 500 people give $20 Sandy will be able to get on her feet and move into the next phase of her life. I am a firm believer that If you SEE something you should DO something! It doesn't have to to a big thing JUST SOMETHING . Unfortunately, Sandy has the same problems as many older Americans do in today's world. It is my hope to possibly start foundation that would help these people in our area . Who knows maybe that is where sandy could find her employment. It's so important to take care of our elderly who sometimes get lost in the cracks. Thank you for your time and caring .
