Help us help our cousin and brother Gary Young

Please help the family of Gary Young  in his fight against lung cancer that has metastasized to his liver, spine and brain.

Gary is a school psychologist who has worked throughout the Humboldt and Del Norte County educational communities for the North Coast Children's Head Start Center. In this role he has helped special needs children for the last 23 years to ensure they are provided with every opportunity to have healthy successful lives.

Gary's kind heart, love of children, selflessness and commitment to helping others has quietly been his calling throughout his life. Everyone who meets him is taken by his kind spirit and humility. Gary is truly a gentle giant who has touched the hearts and lives of all that know him. He is also a Yurok tribal member and takes great pride in his culture and family. He is an exceptional father, grandfather, friend, and son who is loved by all.

Gary is currently receiving treatment at St Joseph’s Hospital, the same hospital where he was born 51 years ago.   Last August Gary was the picture of health, walking his daughter down the aisle and dancing at her wedding. A few short months later, a visit to and tests run by his local Indian health clinic showed abnormal liver readings and a follow-up ultrasound revealed “nodes” on his liver.  At that time he was given a script to see an oncologist but that visit did not occur because it was withdrawn and he was given recommendations to cut down on his beer consumption while watching the Niner’s and Warriors.

Gary continued to feel out of sorts…..not himself, and a few months later while getting up from the floor during a visit with his special needs kids something cracked in his back causing him such pain that he could barely drive home.  His wife Ossie took him to the ER, tests followed that revealed he had cancer that caused 3 ribs to break. He was finally diagnosed on oct 31st with non small cell metastic carcinoma that metastasized to his liver, bones, spine and brain.   After an inordinately long time of obtaining needed referrals, authorizations endless phone calls and lab tests Gary was finally seen at the St Joseph’s oncology unit. Today he is finishing up the last of 15 radiation treatments to his brain, shoulder and hip.  Gary also just had his first Chemotherapy treatment 2 weeks ago. The cancer that went unchecked for months has taken a devastating toll on Gary’s body and his cognitive facilities. He has lost mobility of his legs. We can only hope that the treatments given him kick in and allow him to stay with us because we just lost his Dad Geno Young in the same kind of situation from Lymphoma in March 2015.

Gary has not been able to work for over two months nor has his wife Ossie who has taken a leave of absence from her job at Open Door Clinic Burre Dental Center to care for him.  Gary has a referral to be seen at the University of California, San Francisco Helen Diller Cancer Center. The costs of those trips back and forth for someone in his condition will be very high  and the output to make his home environment safe and suitable for someone in his condition have exhausted all of the family resources.

Gary’s wife and family will be forever grateful for any monetary contribution whatsoever that you are able to give to help them survive this disastrous illness that has devastated his family and friends.

Please feel free to share this with anyone you think may want to help.
