Help Kitten Fight Cancer

Last month, life as we knew it changed in an instant. What began as occasional vomiting and diarrhea quickly escalated into an emergency situation for my beloved 8-year-old cat, Kitten. He had stopped being able to properly digest his food and was rapidly losing weight. After rushing him to the vet and doing what seemed like every diagnostic test under the sun, we learned he had a large mass in his stomach that required immediate, high-risk surgery.

Thanks to the incredible skill of Dr. Mayne, the surgery was a success — but the biopsy brought heartbreaking news. The mass was diagnosed as large cell lymphoma, an aggressive form of cancer.

The good news is that there is hope. There are treatments available for LCL in cats, and with the right treatment, many go on to live longer, happy lives. After meeting with a veterinary oncologist today at Fetch, we learned that the best path forward for Kitten is the CHOP chemotherapy protocol — the most effective chemotherapy option for this type of cancer. CHOP is a combination chemotherapy protocol that utilizes a cocktail of drugs: Cyclophosphamide, Doxorubicin, Vincristine, and Prednisolone. And cats, unlike humans, actually tolerate chemotherapy very well.

Our oncologist is optimistic and believes this treatment could give Kitten the chance to go into remission and live years beyond this diagnosis.

But hope comes with a heavy price tag. The cost for the 4½-month CHOP treatment is estimated between $5,800–$6,500 — and that’s in addition to the emergency surgery he has already undergone.

Kitten is only 8 years old, he is goofy, in good spirits, full of love, and not ready to give up — and I’m not ready to give up on him either. I’ve dedicated my life to rescuing animals, selflessly serving our community for nearly 15 years, often putting their needs before my own. And I do so with my head held high. I already work two jobs, and I’m adding more hours where I can, but this unexpected expense on top of caring for all the animals in my home, and the daily expense of general life, is overwhelming. But Kitten is part of our family, and you fight for your family.

This is where I humbly ask for your help. This is not easy for me, and I am turning to my community, wearing my humility on my sleeve. Any amount, big or small, will make a difference in giving Kitten the fighting chance he deserves.
