Help Us Grant a Unique Final Wish

When our mother, Maggie Salzberg, was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in October 2014, we didn’t know how much time she had left.

We are incredibly grateful that modern medicine, fate/a higher power, and her own fighting spirit gave her so much more time than we could have hoped for.

Over the past few years, she has been able to meet and get to know her two grandchildren, and spend many special moments with us and her other family members and friends. She has been able to attend birthdays, showers, weddings, and holiday celebrations.  She has gone trick-or-treating with her grandchildren, even while in pain and in a wheelchair – she wouldn’t have missed it for anything. She has continued to cook her amazing meals and – when healthy enough – enjoy meals with us.  She has been able to keep up with her favorite TV shows and movies, laughing and wondering and experiencing a gamut of emotions alongside us.

We cherish all of these moments we’ve had with her, all of this unexpected time.  They are gifts that we will never forget, and that we will continue to talk about with each other, and with our children.

Now, unfortunately, it seems our mom’s journey is almost at an end.

It’s a difficult thing for anyone to come to terms with, and of all her struggles, this has been the most difficult for her, too.

When faced with this news, our mother found comfort in one thing, something that perfectly matches her unconventional choices and her love of the bizarre: Being buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, a beautiful place full of history, complete with its own spooky legend.

Our mother’s choice is also about some last control over what happens to her body.  She has opted for a green burial, so that her body can return to the nature that she has always loved and found solace in.

We are sad that this time has come, but glad to know the comfort that our mom feels about this choice.

While green burials are less costly than most other funeral options, due to financial struggles of our own, we cannot cover all of the costs of her burial. And so, we’re reaching out to you – family, friends, loved ones – even kind acquaintances and strangers – to please help us give her this final gift.

We would be grateful for any donation that brings us closer to our goal, and our mom closer to knowing that when her journey ends, she’ll be in a place she loves.
